Looking back: 2009 Ann Street Gallery

The Ann Street Gallery is a non-profit art gallery located in the Cornerstone building. All of their exhibitions are mentioned here on the blog. So, I thought it would be a good idea to mention some of their highlights from 2009 that they published in their annual report. It’s shows the positive impact they have had on Newburgh, bringing arts to the community.

In 2009:

  • Over 1,200 people visited the gallery in 2009.
  • The gallery presented five acclaimed exhibitions featuring urban art and graffiti, book art, women textile artists, outsider art and drawing.
  • In November, the gallery hosted its 1st Annual High Tea Party, with tea tastings, chamber music and raffle prizes.
  • In December, the gallery was named the Times Herald-Record’s Reader’s Choice “Best Gallery” for the second consecutive year.
  • The importance of the gallery was recognized by support received from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation/Assemblyman Frank Skartados and the Virginia Cretella Mars Foundation.

Perhaps Newburgher and local businessman, Eric Jarmann put it best:

“The role that Safe Harbors plays in the arts is not what I typically expect from a nonprofit organization. They have set many large goals, but yet not forgotten the people and resources already here, some of which were languishing from neglect and the effects of time. I see them as nurturers, protectors, builders, and charting a course toward a great artistic future for Newburgh. By offering to stabilize the lives of local artists, Safe Harbors has allowed them to focus on their art and stay active in the creative community. The Ann Street Gallery gathers and presents art worth seeing. It is no surprise that the public has acknowledged this with accolades. The Ritz Theater, both in its current and future forms, is bringing the experience of musical performance to a building and city that has been too quiet for too long.”

Hopefully 2010 will be another successful year with more visitors to the gallery and more support. Take the opportunity to visit the different exhibitions that will be displayed there year round.
