Rescue Me

This picture was taken over on Henry Street, and it is literally 2 doors away from the Hudson River and mountain views. The day the photo was taken the wind was blowing fiercely. Loose window panes swung in the wind, as well as the roofing of the bay window. Habitat for Humanity has done some amazing work removing paint from original brick, so one would assume the same could be done here. This home is in an active restoring part of the Heights. Many of it’s neighbors have restored beautiful homes. This one needs to hurry up and be a part of the list! I have no other information on the home. Feel free to leave comments if you know any details.

Newburgh is New York State’s second largest historic district after NYC. Newburgh literally has hundreds of dilapidated and abandoned buildings just begging for someone to come scoop them up and restore them.I’ll continue to post my own photos, but if you have a particular building you would like to see saved, email me the photo of any building you appreciate that you would like to see rescued! You never know who you might inspire.

  • Cher, this house (right across the street from me!) is not for sale. It was sold at auction last year, and the new owner has been gradually working on it since then — you can see the building permits in the window. It was FILLED with trash and debris, and the clean out took a very long time (if you think it looks bad now, you should have seen it a few years ago). A new roof has already been put on, and work on the interior has recently picked up again. I’m pretty sure the owner already went before the ARC and had his plans approved, so hopefully we can expect exterior work to resume when the weather improves.

  • Oh that’s great! I don’t go up to homes and read the signs in the doors or windows. I’ll be back soon to take a picture of it when it’s restored! That is the cool part about documenting the current vacant state of these homes. I can go back and take pictures after they are restored. You guys have a great little niche over there!

  • Cher,
Yes the owner and his wife came before the ARC with beautiful restoration plans for the house, developed by Minuta Architecture. There are some lovely details on this house you just can’t see because they are all monocrome under ththe paint. They were approved for the work to go forward.
I think the only hinderance to the outside work has been the weather. Hopefully for more activitiy in the spring.

  • That’s is awesome Brigidanne! Hopefully the owners will do a before and after post with me to show all the hard work they did. Joe probably has a lot of old photos as well. Thanks!

  • I recently obtained approval from ARC for a restoration project to be performed on this property a few months ago… the Owner is currently working on selecting contractors in order to finalize their building permit 🙂

  • Very cool Joseph! I’ll be following along to see how it comes out! Excited ***
