Rescue Me: 52 Liberty Street WH

Abandoned and Vacant Newburgh homes

This grand old lady sits on the corner of Liberty and Courtney Ave. It looks like it’s been empty for a while, so sad. Look closely and you can see original stained glass windows on the third floor. Occupation and restoration of this home would be a major change and anchor for this part of Liberty Street and the Heights. It’s neighbor is the lime green home featured last week. There are many photos of the Heights neighborhood when it was first formed in 1891. Surely an original photo of this home exists as well.

Newburgh is New York State’s second largest historic district after NYC. Newburgh literally has hundreds of dilapidated and abandoned buildings just begging for someone to come scoop them up and restore them.I’ll continue to post my own photos, but if you have a particular building you would like to see saved, email me the photo of any building you appreciate that you would like to see rescued. You never know who you might inspire!

  • I had no idea that house is vacant now. If that’s the case, it was occupied until very recently. It’s one of my favorites in the Heights — I’d love to see the siding removed and the clapboard restored. The shape is so unusual, and I really like the corner entrance.

(I think Hudson has the largest historic district in the state? Newburgh’s was actually the largest until a couple of years ago when Hudson’s was increased to include an additional area.)

  • I didn’t go too close to the house. But as you can see there was snow on the ground at the time, and there were no indications of foot prints or a clear path going inside or outside of the home. It looked pretty empty to me.

I read that Newburgh was the 2nd largest historic district in the state, second only to NYC. It was mentioned in Wikipedia, and Chronogram article, and probably a few other places I can’t remember. Other articles have said it’s the largest. I figured saying the 2nd largest was pretty safe. Either way, it’s up there! Over 4,000 historic buildings according to Newburgh Revealed.

  • Hi.
The owner of this house was before the ARC in 2010. (a local developer/landlord/business owner)
Possibly didn’t want to start in the colder weather or were waiting for tennant relocation.
Hope they will start with the exerior renovation soon, now that the nicer weather is coming.

  • That’s great to know! I guess I’ll have to keep passing by to check up on the progress.
