15 Powder Mill Road Newburgh NY

This property is in the Town of Newburgh, but it’s interesting circular design was so unique I couldn’t pass it up to show on NR. Plus, it’s almost 200 years old! According to the listing:

“A tastefully renovated 3332 sq ft stone & clapboard home surrounded by stone walls. It offers 5 bedrooms 3 1/2 baths, hardwood floors throughout, amazing kitchen with unique details, granite and handcrafted cabinetry. Huge Master Bedroom suite ,living room with fireplace. Real stone porch and in ground pool. A separate building lot 65 – 3 -25 is included in price.”

I wish the listing would include photos of the separate building and in-ground pool!

  • With your very own powder mill ruins to walk through in Algonquin Park across the street.

  • There is a tunnel connecting to the park as well.

  • I was friends with the girl who lived here when I was a kid…it’s true about the tunnel connecting to the ruins at the park, but they bricked it up decades ago.

  • I surmised that this site was part of the DuPont powder works. Never researched it though. Anyone know?

  • It’s part of the old “Orange Mills” property. The complex produced black powder from 1815 to 1901. Orange Mills specialized in the production of rifle powder for sportsmen and was sold under the labels “Orange Duckling”, “Orange Extra Sporting”, “Orange Special”, and “Orange Lightening.” The mill was powered by water turbines until 1868 and then switched to steam power to eliminate the reliance on seasonal water flow changes.

A sawmill was on the site from 1790 to 1815 run by Elnathan Foster. He sold the property to Asa Taylor who produced powder by the “copper stamper” method until 1818. Then Daniel Rogers expanded the operation between 1818 and his death in 1828. His sons resumed operations then sold it in 1859 to “Rogers and Company” who sold to “Smith and Rand.” They merged with “Laflin Powder Company” in 1869 to become “Laflin and Rand Powder Company”. In the late 19th century, “Laflin and Rand” were competitors to the “Dupont Company” but the two often entered into joint ventures. They also had both been founding members of the Gunpowder Trade Association in 1872. By 1902, Dupont possessed the Orange Mill site through a merger. Production ceased and the machinery was shipped to Brandywine, Delaware by 1908. The property was sold as “Dupont Park” to Albert Noe Waring who sold it to Frederic Delano (uncle of FDR) in 1929. Delano then renamed the property “Algonquin Park” and gave it to the City of Newburgh. Between 1934 and 1940 it was converted from an industrial site to a park by the WPA. In 1978 Orange County acquired the park from the City of Newburgh.
