If you have been reading this blog for a while you will know about my obsession of carriage houses. They are my favorite structures along with small cottages and rowhomes. Newburgh’s mansions are magnificent, but neighborhoods with smaller buildings have more soul.
It was my delight to be able to tour this carriage house on Dubois Street during Newburgh Open Studios. It is used as an art studio for Richard Harper. He and his wife Paula were searching for the perfect home. Richard said that this home was the right one for them because of the carriage house and Downing Park right across the street. They did a lot of work on the building; some on their own, and some contracted out. The wavy glass of the original windows and beams in the roof just make this a great place to be. It’s still standing over 100 years later. There are many structures like this in Newburgh, one of the many great draws of the city. If you dream of your own carriage house or cottage, keep searching. There are many in need of restoration.
First floor.
Staircase to second floor.
Second floor. Richard installed a skylight that allows the top floor to be flooded with light. His ideal place to paint.
This is wonderful!
I know that building! :)) beautiful on the inside, too (just like its owners).
That looks very cool……….
I just gasped ! It’s fabulous!
Amazing!!!! Love this!!!
I too love this carriage house restoration–so perfectly executed. FYI even though they are not strictly speaking carriage homes, there are some nearby properties for sale on Dubois which are very charismatic–in not that bad condition –and you would be on the same block as this home!
