118 1st St Newburgh NY

A Quality Row beauty is up for sale. The homes of Quality Row are historical gems. This house lives up to the reputation of the block with well maintained interiors with historical details. In 1836 1883 Thomas Edison stayed in one of these homes as a guest while establishing the Edison Illuminating Company. This is how the name Quality Row came about according to the 1891 publication Newburgh: Her Institutions, Industries and Leading Citizens:

At the time of their erection these house were considered much above the average in cost and elegance, and for this reason, combined with the high social standing of the original occupants, the buildings were known throughout the village as “Quality Row,” a designation which still lingers among our old families.”

  • Minor correction: Edison could not have stayed in one of these houses in 1836. He was born in 1847.

If I were to take a guess, he was probably lodged in the QR houses either late 1883 or early 1884, as that’s when Newburgh’s Edison plant was being built (although certain factories in Newburgh had electric generators as early as 1881.)
