New Store Oliver & Chatfield Opens on Southern Liberty Street

For the longest while Liberty Street happenings have been confined between Broadway and Spring Street. Available retail spaces are scarce for the first time in years. Up and coming businesses have to consider options further north and south if they want to be on Liberty Street. Susan Knapik is the proprietor of Oliver & Chatfield located at 42 Liberty Street. She’s new to the Newburgh scene coming from Cornwall, but originally hailing from Cleaveland, Ohio.

Oliver & Chatfield has been in business since 2018. Susan originally only wanted to be on Liberty Street in Newburgh. When all the retail options were full, she took a chance on Cornwall. However, when she learned there was a spot available at 42 Liberty she jumped at the chance. The store is a “general store du jour of great design, nifty gifties, home decor and earth conscious.”

Susan knows she might be early but doesn’t mind being one of the first on the block. Friends call her “South Willy” for the shop’s location at the intersection of Liberty Street and South William. She views her business as a small part of the change in the world, helping bring back retail to revitalizing downtowns, a shift from the suburban sprawl of the 80’s and 90’s she saw growing up in Cleaveland. She also has a background in interior design that she uses to curate her selection.

The shop joins the ranks of Panja, Simple Gifts and Goodies, and The Newburgh Pottery – all located south of South William Street. Projects that should be launching this year are the Untouchable Bar, 109 S. William Street, 41 Liberty Street engineering firm, and 2 Liberty Street.

Soft Opening of Hudson Taco

The wait is finally over, (or at least until Monday) for the general public to get a taste of Newburgh’s newest restaurant, Hudson Taco. It has undergone quite the transformation since the days the West Shore Train Station was an abandoned eyesore on Newburgh’s waterfront. The renovated space has been empty for years since the Railroad Playhouse left. Since last summer work began behind the scenes to get the restaurant ready. Now, alongside the Pizza Shop, the West Shore Train Station will undoubtedly become the destination for those looking for casual family-friendly dining options, yet still chic enough for a date night.

The name says it all – tacos. There are more than a dozen options with options for vegetarians, vegans, and the carb conscious.  You can also find an array of appetizers, bowls, and sides if you want something different. They will be serving lunch, weekend brunch, and even delivery. Newburgh Brewery fans will be excited to learn about the special collaboration brew, Amaizing. Hopefully, Hudson Taco will help foster Newburgh’s growing restaurant scene west of Water Street. See below for more scenes from the friends and family opening night.

New Businesses Coming to South Liberty Street

For years Liberty Street between Broadway and Spring Street has seen the majority of action and excitement of new businesses coming downtown. Besides the arrival of Panja, the stalled development of 2 Liberty Street, and the much-anticipated change of ownership of the Liberty Street School, not much has happened. That is about to change as new businesses begin to take a chance on the many empty storefronts further south.

Cornwall general store, Oliver and Chatfield is coming to Newburgh and will open at 42 Liberty Street. The tentative opening will happen in February. Next door is the Untouchable Bar, from the same owner of popular Quinn’s in Beacon. From what I have heard they are waiting on certain approvals to open. If you have ever been to Quinn’s you can more than likely expect the same aesthetic and crowd at Untouchable. There was an art exhibition opening there last November. And then for a bit of a mix up a new beauty salon is planning to open this spring/summer at 63 Liberty Street called Liberty and Beauty.

The development of 109 South William Street is still being finalized, and we are all still waiting to see the engineering firm that was awarded the RFP for 41 Liberty take residence. And to wrap this all up, just in case you were wondering what is going inside the old Caffe Macchiatto space, the Liberty Street Bistro will be expanding all the way to corner.

Hopefully, we will see these projects and more take off when spring sets in.
