“Every few years the City of Newburgh Fire Department falls prey to budget cuts on the annual city budget. It is yet to be determined if our firefighters will lose their jobs. Our local department is at the mercy of the SAFER GRANT being renewed. To keep morale lifted and community support of the men, women and dog who make up the Newburgh Fire Department; we have created a FIREFIGHTERS BALL. An evening of dinner, dancing, auctions and admission to Motorcyclepdia Museum. MaryKay Messenger of the West Point Band will be starting off the evening singing and Hudson Valley artist Decora will be performing accompanied by DJ H20. Ticket prices are $50 per person and all additional proceeds will go to our local fire department. The funds will be used towards offsetting costs for future equipment purchases.

This past weekend was the Newburgh Illuminated Festival. It’s a labor of love and pride for the city; a day for everyone to gather and share the hope they have for this city. The festival proves:

  1. That people will come to Downtown Newburgh. It was single file walking room on Liberty between Broadway and Washington
  2. People will park their cars and walk the city
  3. Yes, people are willing to spend their money here

The challenge is translating this energy into new business creation and tourism for the city. How can we replicate a fraction of this on a daily basis?  I’m not sure I have the answer, but enjoy the photos that show what a future Newburgh could look like.

It’s back for 2018, the Newburgh Illuminated Festival. Truly, it is one of the best days you can ever visit the city. Even though a tornado hit downtown, the community is definitely going to come out bigger than ever for this annual festival.

It is located at the intersection of Broadway and Liberty Street. The best place to park is the Ann Street municipal lot, and even the waterfront, walk up Washington to Liberty Street. Let’s hope it’s a sunny day!

Erika Norton Urie is trying to help find homes for stray cats in Newburgh with her Instagram page Newburgh’s Little Cuties. Read more below:

This is Mr. MauMau who is an abandoned cat that has lived in my backyard.  Would you consider posting this little photo?  I’m also trying to find a home for the rest of them and have started a page called Newburgh’s Little Cuties.  I spay and neuter all of them, vaccinate them and have managed to find homes for a few so far.  I want to end the stray care problem in my neighborhood in a positive and humane way.

So sad for Newburgh tonight and the two lives that were lost during today’s tornado. Most have no electricity and no cell phone service in the city. This is just some of the damage on Liberty Street where the roofs came off two buildings. The city is in a state of emergency.
