Press release and online flyer:

The battle for the Hudson Valley Croquet Crown is about to begin – and you’re invited to play.

The Newburgh Historical Society challenges the Beacon Historical Society to a West Shore vs. East Shore game on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 2 to 6 p.m., in Newburgh’s Downing Park, at the corner of Robinson Ave. and South St.

Where do your loyalties lie – Newburgh, Fishkill, Kingston, Beacon, New Paltz or Poughkeepsie areas? Choose a side and join the action in this friendly game in the park. We’ll teach beginners how to play.

City of Newburgh Mayor Judy Kennedy hopes to lead the West Shore to victory as team captain, and a “challenge” has been issued to the City of Beacon Mayor Randy Casale to grab a win for the East Shore team.

Show your team spirit by wearing something representing what you love about the history of your community. Or, sport a Gibson girl look for a little historical fun.

The winners get their names emblazoned on a trophy. The losers go home with heavy hearts.

The Historical Society will provide old-timey music, historical games, light refreshments, and participants can bring their own picnics. T-shirt sales and raffle with prizes benefit the community groups involved. The event is co-presented with the Downing Park Planning Committee and the Newburgh Preservation Association.

Vaux & Olmsted’s “Other” Central Park is the title of an article recently written on bobvila.com about Downing Park. Like every great city, green spaces are essential to balance out the urban landscape. Apart from the Hudson River and Washington’s Headquarters, Newburgh has this historic park with trees over 100 years old designed by legendary landscape architects Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

“Downing Park has serpentine paths and picturesque vistas—features very similar, though on a different scale, to those of New York City’s Central Park,” points out Christopher Tripoli, executive director of the Downing Park Planning Committee, which oversees and maintains the park. “Andrew Jackson Downing was Olmsted and Vaux’s mentor and lived in Newburgh his whole life. This was the last park that Olmsted and Vaux designed together and the only park that they collaborated on with their sons, John Olmsted and Downing Vaux.”
