STRONGROOM is pleased to present Grids of Formation, a site-specific installation by JESSICA ANGEL in the parlor room of 91 Liberty St., Newburgh, NY.

Jessica Angel’s installations take over architectural interiors, exploring the possibility of visual illusion and space transformation with the use of perspective. For her installation at 91 Liberty street, she made an immersive environment using the existing traditional architectural details to create a space-altering experience. With materials like vinyl and wallpaper that cover the walls, ceiling, and floor of the room, this piece plays with our understanding of reality, reflecting upon the tension between technology and the hand-made. Jessica Angel’s interest in space and science has led her to study the relative direction of space. It is widely known that in our universe, there is no true “up” or “down,” and that our perception of direction is related to a grid of points of reference that are entirely relative. Grids of Formation expresses the idea of the grid as a structural, fundamental element that arranges the homogeneous and isotropic universe, seen in the large scale, into a heterogeneous, diverse and directional world when perceived in human scales.

Jessica Angel is a Colombian artist based in Brooklyn. Recent projects include installation at SVA, Seton Hall University, and the Bogotá Planetarium in Colombia. In August she completed a residency at MASS MoCA, and immediately following her Strongroom installation in Newburgh, she will be heading to The Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts in Alabama AEIVA to install a 9,000 square-foot installation in the museum’s lobby, second floor, and galleries. She will also be teaching a class there covering themes such as the exhibition as a platform for integrated education, and art production around the study of architecture and science.

STRONGROOM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Newburgh, NY producing pop-up contemporary art exhibitions.
