Color Music Artist Reception

August 7, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Free

The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception at the Karpeles Museum on Friday, August 7, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Fascinated since his under-graduate days at the College Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati with the psychological and aesthetic relation between sound and color, composer and visual artist Michael Poast has developed a unique notation system fusing the auditory and the visual in fluid shapes and vivid hues.

Holding a Masters of Fine Art degree from the from the City University of New York, Poast is a member of the faculty at Pratt Institute and St. John’s University Poast and has given workshops at the Juilliard School. He is the Director of the InterMedia Ensemble in New York City and also holds the title of Composer-in-Residence at the Players Theater in Greenwich Village.

Among the most innovative visual expressions in contemporary music theory, his work has been presented at avant-garde festivals in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and the American Museum of the Moving Image. He has received many honors for both his visual art and his music, including awards from the Lila Acheson Wallace Fund, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Queens Council on the Arts, and ASCAP.

A recording of Michael Poast’s celebrated Color Music Mass, which premiered professionally at St. Peter’s Church in Citicorp’s Classical Concert Series in New York City in 1913, will be played at the museum during the exhibition.
