General’s Lady

In honor of Women’s History Month, Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site will hold its annual program, TheGeneral’s Lady, Sunday, March 22nd at 2:00 PM.  Inspired by Martha Washington, this event pays tribute to both the impact of noteworthy historical women, and to contemporary women making a difference in the field of history and preservation in the Hudson Valley.

Sharing her unique perspective on historic preservation will be Ruth Pierpont, Deputy Commissioner for Historic Preservation for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Throughout her career she has also served as past president and current board member of the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, an adjunct professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Building Conservation Program, and Commissioner of the City of Troy Department of Planning and Community Development.

The program will be topped off with the presentation of the 2015 Martha Washington Woman of History Award, which recognizes a woman’s outstanding contribution to Hudson Valley history. This year’s recipient, author and historian Willa Skinner, is a founding member of the Fishkill Historical Society, a member of the Dutchess County Municipal Historians Association and the Association of Public Historians of New York State. She has taught Tracing your House’s Roots for Dutchess County Community College, is the author of Signal Fires in the Highlands, and has written a column in the Southern Dutchess News and Beacon Free Press, for more than forty years.
