NAACP Film Event: BLACK WALL ST. @ Newburgh Free Library

March 3, 2016 @ 11:30 pm - 1:30 am

Free

“Learning How to Improve Our Financial Situations and Better Control Our Community” is the title of the NAACP Newburgh/Highland Falls Branch’s first ever Economic Empowerment Symposium to take place on Thurs., Mar. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Newburgh Free Library.

The documentary “Black Wall Street” will be shown, focusing on the immense challenges of America’s most successful black community, the Greenwood District, located in northeast Oklahoma. Called Black Wall Street because of its prominence within the community, the Greenwood District was made up of black-owned businesses, schools, churches and community organizations that grew into a very prosperous community. However, trouble came in June 1921 when black residents were massacred during a race riot that left about 300 people dead and many buildings destroyed.
