Navigating Newburgh

January 25, 2018 @ 10:45 pm - 1:30 am

For NN14 I have asked the Newburgh Police department to share with us. We welcome Lieutenant Weaver to speak with NN Thursday January 25th at 5:45pm in the Safe Harbors Multi Purpose room, (111 Broadway, Newburgh 12550)  Topics will include lowering crime in Newburgh, discussing how and why NB seems to be where the county and/or other cities send their parolees, and also what is going on with the Newburgh Civil Service Administration??  Lieutenant Weaver, who has been running the NB police currently, I am sure, would appreciate our support while we wait for a ruling on Doug Solomon becoming Police Chief.

ENTREPRENEURIAL MEETING 2

NN will start at 5:45 as usual. At approximately 7pm we will segway into our second Entrepreneurs meeting.

During the January 8th Council meeting in the wee hours of a very long meeting a few of the council members mentioned they are open to a discussion and development of a plan focusing on Economic development. I want to answer that request and commit myself to providing an environment for those discussions to begin. Until a more formal structure can be implemented, I can’t think of a better use for the Navigating Newburgh meetings. So let’s start a dialogue.I invite all business owners, all Entrepreneurs, to sit together with me Thursday, January 25th to brainstorm on what Newburgh can do to support its local businesses and how to attract new businesses to call Newburgh home. I want to identify the problems and start a process of finding solutions.

THE HILL

I contacted a friend of mine who is chair of of a very prestigious architectural school and explained, as best I could, the situation Newburgh is in. What he recommended was either a public or invited master plan development competition for the hillside. Not only would this bring a tremendous amount of PR to Newburgh it would ensure that we would be harnessing as many ideas as is possible so we are extremely well informed and can expose ourselves to every option.

It is so rare to have a view shed of this caliber. We owe it to to Newburgh to shake loose every idea and concept before acting. Each parcel needs to relate to the other so the whole area is carefully contemplated. We need to set an international example of designing the best environmental forward solutions so that Newburgh can be the city of the future and simultaneously be an accurate and beautiful record of the past.

The hill side is very handsome the way it is now. There is no need to rush into developing it, without vetting all possibilities.

We have an incredible amount of housing to fill. Countless store fronts to activate with commerce.

MASTER PLAN

As many are aware the 10 year mark for the master plan has come and gone. There is no reason we can’t create another competition to attract the best of the best to help Newburgh plan for the next 10 years. https://www.cityofnewburgh-ny.gov/sites/newburghny/files/u97/masterplan-final.pdf

The Planning and Development Board has a wealth of information on their website.

I look forward to seeing you on the 25th. Let’s Share.
