Palate Tasting: the Côtes of France

April 21, 2017 @ 9:00 pm - 12:00 am

We are sampling the “Côtes” this week, meaning the banks or hillside in French. We’ll be exploring Côtes Du Rhone and Côtes Catalanes.

Domaine Grand Retour, Côtes du Rhone Village, France

In an area surrounding the famed Côtes du Rhone appelation in France, a sub-region called the “Villages” offers nearly identical terroir without the fancy price tag. This particular estate, Plan de Dieu, has a history of viticulture as far back as the Middle Ages. This blend is made from 70% Grenache with 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre

Tasting Notes: Big red berry fruit and savory herbs.

Food Pairing: Pair with garlicky beef or mutton burgers.

Domaine des Enfants, Le Jouet, Côtes Catalanes, France

In the heart of the Roussillion region, in the south of France, the Mediterreanean influence is present to the very last drop. This woman winemaker vineyard is focused on sustainable and bio-dynamic agriculture and creating vintages that express the essence of the region.

Pairing and Tasting Notes:
Nice acidity levels, and a brightness in fruit. Smokey aromatics coming from the soil show through very clearly.

Food Pairing:
Red sauce pasta, poultry, roasted lamb, and soft cheeses.
