We Free Strings
November 18 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Jazz at Atlas is proud to present as part of its live music series We Free Strings, an ensemble comprised of multiple accomplished, veteran players of not just forward-thinking jazz but many other musical traditions — spanning the globe, ancient to the future. We Free Strings features Jason Hwang and Gwen Laster on violins, Alexander Waterman on cello, Melanie Dyer on viola, Ken Filiano on bass, and Michael Wimberly on percussion. We Free Strings will perform on Saturday, November 18 at 8 PM at Atlas Studios. General admission will be $15 at the door. Atlas Studios is located at 11 Spring Street in Newburgh, NY. Ample onsite parking is available.
We Free Strings has this to say about their work:
“We Free Strings embodies the ethos of FreeJazz, both embracing and dismantling western music and traditional jazz conventions. Doing so on viols is an act rooted in identity and socio-political expression that leans in on the quest toward Freedom as a creative and existent goal. We Free Strings sounds in and beyond blues, experimenting with tropes in the black music lexicon and aesthetic values that inhabit Afro Atlantic culture up to contemporary Black experience in the U.S., while signaling present and future Freedom.”
Jazz at Atlas is a cooperative project of writer, musician and multimedia artist James Keepnews, and music researcher, radio host and producer Ben Young. Along with presenting performances by world-renowned creative musicians, JAA will also be offering listening sessions, dialogues with artists and classes covering the entire spectrum of creative music in all its varied manifestations around the world and throughout its history.
