Title: Newburgh Garden Educator and Outreach Coordinator
Reports to: Education Director
Status: full time

Position Overview: Hudson Valley Seed’s Garden Educator will implement and help develop Hudson Valley Seed’s curriculum-integrated garden program as well as build community outreach and parent engagement surrounding the school gardens. The Garden Educator will be working in the Newburgh City School District bringing students out to school gardens to teach academics and nutrition through experiential garden learning. The Garden Educator will administer lessons both indoors and outdoors, teaching students Hudson Valley Seed-curricula year round. The Garden Educator will work closely with participating school teachers, parents and community members, and partner organizationsto build the presence of the organization in the City of Newburgh. The Garden Educator will work closely with the rest of the Hudson Valley Seed team as they collectively educate over 2,500 students throughout the school year across Putnam, Dutchess and Orange Counties.

Responsibilities:

Education Program:

Implement and teach garden and nutrition based programs to approximately 30 classes, Kindergarten – 2nd grade, in the Newburgh City School District, teaching in indoor and outdoor settings. Classes run bi-weekly or monthly.
Maintain school gardens in optimum condition and presentation for students. Garden upkeep is done frequently.
Maintain regular communication with schools and documentation of programs. Provide resources for teachers and model place-based and experiential learning through teaching.
Manage and care for existing education program materials, supplies, and equipment as well as the development of new ones as needed.
Assist with garden lesson planning including working with other staff to develop materials.
Maintain necessary paperwork (weekly, monthly, and annually), ex: weekly teaching recaps, keeping records of time spent on programs, and contact lists.
Participate in regular Hudson Valley Seed staff meetings.
Assist in writing program descriptions for newsletters, program guides, social media, and website.
Create and implement annual outreach plan and budget for Newburgh. Attend relevant community meetings and events. Identify new opportunities for outreach. Maintain relationships with collaborative partners and cultivate new ones.
Outreach into the Newburgh community, including acting as liaison to PTAs and partnering community organizations, to develop and maintains positive and professional relationships with parents, local businesses, media and the general public.
Recruit and train parents as Hudson Valley Seed volunteers and engage them in maintaining school gardens and garden work days.
Create, coordinate and implement volunteer recognition activities such asvolunteer appreciation events and volunteer thank you letters.
Host and participate in events at school, (family fun nights, back to school, et) and/or coordinate volunteers or other educators at these events.
Maintain regular communication with teachers and administrators in regards to Garden Time programming.
Send school-specific communications home to parents.
Manage photo releases and taking photos of garden time.
Other duties as assigned.
Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Position Qualifications:

Master’s degree or commensurate experience – with demonstrable work experience in environmental education, education, or related field.
Experience in environmental educational program planning, development, and implementation.
Demonstrable gardening experience as well as experience using gardens as outdoor classrooms.
Familiarity with teaching in public schools.
Experience working with people of all ages and backgrounds in an outdoor environmental education setting, with an emphasis on outdoor classroom management.
Strong background in and passion for the natural world & gardening.
Creative and enthusiastic communication/presentation skills.
Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
Experience with Microsoft Office and Apple Pages software.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Status: 40 hours per week, full time

Wage: This is a salaried position with benefits. Salary consistent with the staffing of a non-profit organization and commensurate with experience, skills and preferred qualifications.
