Home Renovation

Hi Everyone,

I am in the middle of making a home purchase in Newburgh and should be closing within a few weeks.

The home I am buying is currently a legal two family but was a three family at some point and in the historical district.I am planning on living in one unit, my son in another, and would like to rent out the third. Does anyone happen to know how I would go about having the home converted back to a legal three family? Has anyone had any experience with this? If so, how difficult was the process with the city?

I appreciate any feedback.

Info on a specific house on Grand St?

Maybe a long shot of a question, but do any of you have any information regarding 318 Grand St.? It’s being sold by the bank, as-is, and they aren’t disclosing any info. It looks partially rehabbed, but obviously still a lot more to go. Maybe one of you has some intel that could enlighten a potential buyer? Of course I would get a contractor to inspect it before purchasing, but if anyone has anything to share before that expense I would be grateful. Again, I realize that may be a long shot, but figured I’d ask!

Thank you!

Bicycling clubs, groups meetups

Hi,

I’m looking for a bicycling group that meets up maybe once a week for rides in the Newburgh area. Moderate to semi-quick pace.

Thank you,

Bicycle rentals

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if there is a bike shop in the Newburgh/Beacon/New Windsor area that rents decent 12+ speed road bikes for the day.

Thank you,

Cast Iron Boiler Removal

Hi, I’m looking to have a cast iron boiler removed from our basement in the East End Historic district. Does anyone know of any companies or people in or near Newburgh who do this? I hear they can use a sledgehammer or find other ways of taking it apart. We do not want to do this ourselves, though.

Thanks

City Terrace and 3rd St.

Hi Friends – We’re currently zeroing in on a few properties in Newburgh and will hopefully settle on one shortly. One option is a private sale on the upper part of City Terrace and 3rd Street. I’d love to collect a few opinions on this area – my fianceé isn’t sure it’s safe yet (particularly further down the hill toward 1st). I’m looking at it’s potential being so close to the park, and 3rd street feels much better. Does anyone in the forum live in this area, or know it well? Are we venturing into a part of NoBro that’s still pretty seedy/dangerous?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Historic Cast Iron Railings

I am restoring a building on Grand Street and am looking to restore-repair-replace the cast iron railings on the front stairway. I am looking for parts, an entire railing and/or someone who might be able to restore them. I have attached a photo of the building and railings. Thanks.

Newburgh Water: Drinkable?

A contamination scare article mentioned the water supply has been rerouted from elsewhere.

How safe is the water today?
When will the contaminated blood sample results be a available?

Asbestos! *gulp*

Hello all,

I’m a Brooklynite who will soon be closing on a beautiful Victorian two family.

There’s asbestos covering 140ft of pipes in the basement.

I need to get it inspected by an asbestos specialist in addition to a regular home inspection. I don’t know yet what the price will be to contain or get rid of it, but I thought I’d ask in advance if any of you:

1) Know a good asbestos specialist
2) Know if the city helps out with a percentage of asbestos removal projects.
3) Anything else I need to know about this unpleasant surprise.

Thanks and looking forward to joining the revitalization,
Jan

Public Recycling

Hi,
My husband and I just moved to Newburgh from Brooklyn and have so many cardboard boxes and our residential recycling bin is full. Are there any public recycling drop off locations in Newburgh?

Thanks,
Lori
