SUMMARY:Mark Makers – Exhibit Opening and Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery is pleased to announce our newest exhibition MARK MAKERS\, a group exhibition that examines the practice of drawing as an instinctive mode of creative expression\, with an opening reception on Saturday\, June 15 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nThe MARK MAKERS exhibition is all about drawing. This exhibit brings together a distinctive selection of over forty-five drawings by nineteen artists\, with explorations in graphite\, pastel\, watercolor\, ink and mixed media\, which investigates the medium of drawing through the use of various surfaces\, compositions and scale. \nDrawing has a long history\, beginning around thirty thousand years ago with wall drawings of southern France’s Chauvet Cave and later the Paleolithic cave drawings of Lascaux. As an artistic medium\, it remained popular throughout antiquity and reached exulted heights during the Renaissance. Today\, drawing continues to prevail in contemporary art universities and artist studios\, as a chief means of instruction and self-expression\, by which the tradition of art is passed from generation to generation.\nOn view\, visitors can see a display of works that brings together artists of all schools\, who use drawing as their primary medium. The exposition showcases a plethora of practices and approaches to drawing\, from the classical traditions to the more experimental styles. These works celebrate the possibilities of drawing using both traditional and non-traditional mark making methods\, while addressing subjects as portraiture\, narratives\, figurative work\, interiors\, and abstractions\, distinguished by the diverse quality of line. Whether the drawings feature virtuosity and esthetic refinement or are spontaneous and coarse\, the artists’ varied practices have one object in common\, to promote mark making as a constructive exploration of self-expression.\nFeatured Artists: Joan Belmar\, Geraldo Castro\, Jody Christian\, Angela Cunningham\, Brett Eberhardt\, Marguerite French\, Lauren Scavo-Fulk\, Patricia Bellan-Gillen\, Jason John\, Kirsten Kucer\, David Lantow\, Julie Lindell\, Jo Manglia\, Sarah Petruziello\, Ethan Price\, Beverly Ress\, Patricia Schappler\, Terri Vargas and Daniel Weiner. \nFor more information regarding\, MARK MAKERS or the Ann Street Gallery\, contact Virginia Walsh\, Director at (845) 784-1146\, vwalsh@annstreetgallery.org or visit www.annstreetgallery.org. \nThe exhibition was curated by Virginia Walsh and will be on view through Saturday\, July 27\, 2019. \nThis exhibit is located at The Ann Street Gallery\, 104 Ann Street\, Newburgh\, NY

SUMMARY:Reframing Urban Renewal: Book Talk at the Fullerton Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion about urban renewal in the Hudson Valley and exploring creative ways communities mobilize around contested landscapes. \nFeatured panelists include Ben Schulman of Newburgh Packet\, David Hochfelder and Anne Pfau of 98 acres and University of Albany\, and artist\, academic\, and author of “Contested City\,” Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani. \nThis talk will provide an overview of the historical narrative and foundation for urban renewal in the Hudson Valley. Brief powerpoint presentations will compare what happened in Poughkeepsie\, Peekskill\, Kingston\, and Newburgh\, as well as discuss urban renewal in Albany. The panelists will reveal how the urban renewal story has focused on larger cities and ignored the overweight effect on smaller cities. Lastly\, panelists will discuss how the social narrative of urban renewal has largely been marginalized\, but is now being reshaped and activated by artists/activists who are assigning and finding meaning in contested cityscapes – particularly in places still grappling with urban renewal legacy effects. \nSunday\, April 7\, 2018 at 3pm-5pm\nThe Fullerton Center\n297 Grand Street\, Newburgh NY 12550 \nFree and open to the public\nRSVP is appreciated. RSVP to dosmallinterventions@gmail.com \nThis event is done in collaboration with Dept of Small Interventions\, The Fullerton Center and Binnacle Books- a community bookstore in the Hudson Valley. Thank you to the APA Hudson Valley. \nPhoto Credit: Tom Daley

SUMMARY:Forget Me Not – Exhibit Opening and Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of our newest group exhibition Forget Me Not\, with a reception on Saturday\, November 3 from 6:30–8:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public.\nThe Forget Me Not exhibit is an exploration of art produced by three generations of American veteran-artists\, to mark the centenary of Armistice Day and in celebration of Veterans Day. In remembrance of these occasions\, we wish to honor these veterans for their sacrifices and military service by showcasing their talents here in the gallery.\nThe works on display explore the personal narratives of 21 veteran-artists from disperse communities\, focusing on their unique perspectives and practices of visual culture. The exhibit is designed to give an in-depth look into the way these artists decided to utilize the art-making processes to attain various personal goals. These range from choosing art for its ability to heal by expressing what words cannot\, thus providing a positive outlet for those dealing with PTSD; the chronicling and communicating of complex veteran experiences that encourages conversations with a larger public audience; to the usage of art as a platform for bringing a fresh perspective to who they are as individuals; and the development of a personal creative practice unrelated to service or military culture.\nWithin the context of the exhibition\, visitors can view an array of works such as photography\, ceramics\, printmaking\, illustration\, paintings\, sculpture and a site-specific installation\, with diverse themes that span the controversial gamut of war related subjects to stridently anti-war reflections.\nWe feel the exhibit is a meaningful opportunity to remember our veterans for their service\, but also show appreciation and support for their artistic expressions\, while affording a venue where they can share ideas that strengthen the ties between themselves and the general public through their art.\nArtists featured:Michael Aschenbrenner\, Shawn Auguston\, Zachariah Benson\, Theodore Berkowitz\, Paul Bouchard\, Robert Breur\, James S. Frankel\, Vincent Gianni\, Jenn Hassin\, Brian Higbee\, Christopher Hungerman\, Monty Little\, Drew Matott\, Ty Nicholson\, Walt Nygard\, Jonathan Gavin Patterson\, Ehren Tool\, Dayi Wise\, Ryan Roa\, Vincent Romaniello\, and Abraham Hernandez Romero.\nFor more information regarding\, Forget Me Not or the Ann Street Gallery\, contact Virginia Walsh\, Director at (845) 784-1146\, vwalsh@annstreetgallery\, or visit www.annstreetgallery.org.\nThe exhibition was curated by Virginia Walsh and will be on view through Saturday\, January 5\, 2019.
