SUMMARY:Edmar Castañeda - Electric Harp
DESCRIPTION:A native of Bogotá\, Colombia\, harpist EdmarCastañeda\, is a master at skillfully drawing out lush colors and dynamic spirit from his blue harp. It is\, indeed\, a Columbian harp which is based on the diatonic scale of seven rather than the chromatic twelve notes.\n\nSince his move to the U.S. in 1994\, he has quite literally taken New York and the world stage by storm with the sheer force of his virtuosic command of the harp\, revolutionizing the way audiences and critics alike consider an instrument commonly relegated to the “unusual category.”\n\nStates the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (newspaper): “The Colombian plays the harp like hardly anyone else on earth. His hands\, seemingly powered by two different people\, produce a totally unique\, symphonic fullness of sound\, a rapid-fire of chords\, balance of melodic figures and drive\, served with euphoric Latin American rhythms\, and the improvisatory freedom of a trained jazz musician…captivating virtuosity\, but in no way only virtuosity for its own sake.” He and his harp become one and his joy makes the music he produces even more engaging.\n\nEdmar Castañeda ~ Electric Harp will be in solo concert on Friday\, February 16\, 2018 at 8pm in the Orange Bank & Trust Co Great Room 101\, Kaplan Hall which is located at the corner of Grand & First Streets on the Newburgh campus of SUNY Orange. Free\, secure parking is available in the Kaplan Hall parking garage entered at 73 First St.\n\nTickets can be purchased online anytime atwww.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml\n$12 adults; $10 senior citizens\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni; plus a $ 2.50 online service charge for each online ticket; and free for all students. Free student admission is available only at the door. For on-site purchase\, the box office opens at 7pm before the performance.\n\nQuestions may be directed to Cultural Affairs at(845)341-4891/9386 or cultural@sunyorange.edu\n\nInformation is available through the website atwww.sunyorange.edu/culturalaffairs

SUMMARY:Francois Deschamps: Photo-Rapide Newburgh
DESCRIPTION:Francois Deschamps has been photographing the people of the diverse neighborhood around and near Broadway in Newburgh\, New York\, since 2014. This body of work seems especially relevant in today’s political climate and is dedicated to those who have collaborated with the photographer to create these portraits. \nDeschamps begins by offering free photographs that he produces on the spot with a portable digital printer. The subjects tell the photographer (ethnographer) how they want to be photographed and he follows their directions until they are both satisfied with the results. Often Deschamps is working crouched over a piece of cardboard on a littered sidewalk with a crowd of people gathered around the printer. His openness and the dialogue around the image making allows for a shared intimacy\, since the subjects are posing for themselves\, not for the camera or its operator. \nReturning at a later time with larger prints for his subjects\, Deschamps\, in a gesture of friendship\, is often invited inside their homes to spend time talking to them and listening to their stories of troubles\, determination\, and kindness. The photographs evoke the admiration of the photographer for the strength and resolve that is revealed in the faces of these people who face significant challenges. \nNewburgh Community Photo Project (NCPP) is a grassroots\, community-based arts program that teaches photography and related media to an underserved and underprivileged population in Newburgh\, NY through workshops and mentorships. The goal is to explore critical social justice issues directly related to their lives and community and at the same time provide economic sustainability by imparting and developing important professional skills to the participants. Located at 102 S. William Street in the City of Newburgh\, NY\, NCPP is on Facebook and Instagram @newburghcommunityphotoproject. Please contact Vincent Cianni at 917.562.8494 or at ncpp12550@gmail.com for more information.

SUMMARY:1950s & Nostalgia: In Search of Greatness in the "Golden Age"
DESCRIPTION:Why do film and television love to paint the 1950’s as the American utopia? What is it about this era that gives instant nostalgia (even for those who weren’t alive during the 50’s)? \nThe United States experienced the highest standard of living of any nation in the history of human civilization in the 1950s. But the decade wasn’t golden for everyone. \nJoin us for Think Olio’s Newburgh launch on the evening of August 26th at Atlas Studios! We’ll have a lecture from Professor Lawrence Cappello\, live music from Bartise and cold complimentary craft beer from Newburgh Brewing! \nRSVP: http://www.thinkolio.org/olios/1950s-nostalgia-search-greatness-golden-age/

SUMMARY:History of Stewart Field
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands will present noted New Windsor Town Historian Glenn Marshall who will give a lecture with power-point pictures of Stewart Field on Sunday\, August 20\, at 3PM at the Heritage Center\, 123 Grand Street in Newburgh. Marshall has a treasure trove of photos going back to when the airport was the City Airport for the Newburgh area\, and was home to bi-planes. Later\, when the field was taken over by the U.S. Air Force\, jets replaced the bi-planes and local Newburghers became familiar with the sound of roaring fighter-jets flying over the city and the Hudson Valley. The original owners of the property\, the Newburgh Stewart family\, lived in the heart of the City of Newburgh\, and gave the property to the City for use as an airport. It has been named after the family ever since. Marshall’s talk will cover the history of the field\, and the changes it brought about to the area. His talk last year on the history of the Newburgh shipbuilding industry was a very popular one\, drawing a large crowd to the Heritage Center.

SUMMARY:Ecstatic Chant with Madhava
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of kirtan with special guest Madhava Das. \nFollowed by delicious vegan lunch from Bliss Kitchen! \nA native of Mauritius\, Madhava was given his first drum at the age of 5. At 18\, he moved to Vrindavan\, a place of pilgrimage in India where kirtan has been practised continuously for centuries. He spent the next seven years living in an ashram\, doing kirtan daily with the Krishna Balarama 24 Hour Kirtan Mandali\, under he direction of legendary 24-hour kirtan leader\, Aindra Dasa. While there he played the mrdanga drum for hours on end\, day after day\, honing his rhythmic skill and sensitivity. Unbeknownst to him\, through bootleg recordings he was also becoming an influential figure in the global kirtan scene\, all while sitting on the dusty floor of a small temple in a village in India. When Madhava left to return to the West\, his mentor Aindra impressed on him that he had to take the kirtan back with him from Vrndavan – telling him: “Now it is you who must lead the kirtan”. Based in Switzerland\, Madhava travels extensively through Europe and the US with his wife Radhika and his band Gaura Prema\, enlivening audiences with the power of devotional kirtan. He fuses his Mauritian roots with the influences of India to produce a unique style of kirtan\, but one in which the main ingredient is the heartfelt Bhakti. \nKirtan is a form of devotional chanting with roots going back many centuries in India. It is a primary practice on the path of Bhakti Yoga. The singing is accompanied by musical instruments and rhythmic drumming and the audience is encouraged to participate by chanting\, clapping and dancing. In its heartfelt expression kirtan can induce profound states of meditation and bliss. \nOn Sunday Mornings BLISS is happy to present kirtan led by a variety of talented and devoted musicians. To receive updates of who will be leading on upcoming dates sign up for our mailing list or check our Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Photography Exhibition: Hadza The Roots of Equality
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Title: “Hadza: The Roots of Equality” \nThe Gallery at Atlas Industries\, 11 Spring Street\, Newburgh NY. March 25th – April 24th 2017. \nGallery hours Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 6pm. \nOpening reception March 25th\, 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Wine and refreshments will be served\, as part of Newburgh’s Last Saturday events. \nClosing reception April 21st\, 6:30 pm. An evening of talks on egalitarian social organization\, silent auction\, and a screening of the documentary The Hadza: Last of the First to coincide with Earth Day. \nAward-winning documentarians and academics Jon Cox\, Katrin Redfern\, and Andrew Stern\, in partnership with the Gallery at Atlas Industries have produced a multimedia exhibition documenting the Hadza tribe of Tanzania. The exhibit will present Hadza daily life\, culture\, and expertise through photography\, an immersive soundscape\, text and artifacts – including a traditional Hadza grass hut. The closing reception will include an evening of talks on egalitarian social organization\, a screening of the documentary The Hadza: Last of the First\, and silent auction. All proceeds raised from prints and book sales will go to the Dorobo Fund to secure land rights for the Hadza. \nLong before the social justice movements of today\, humans were engaged in a living experiment in equality. Our common origins as egalitarian hunter-gatherers challenge the idea of human society as inherently selfish and competitive. The Hadza\, some of the last remaining hunter-gatherers on the planet\, provide insight into our past\, and how we might imagine our future at a time when a reimagining is desperately needed. \nThe Hadza are living as they have for tens of thousands of years in one of the most iconic landscapes in the world\, the savannahs and grasslands of Northern Tanzania. With a unique language\, an egalitarian culture\, and expert knowledge about their environment\, the Hadza continue today in the region where modern humans evolved over 100\,000 years ago. Although they have lost 90% of their land in the last 50 years\, they are one of the few remaining sources of valuable direct knowledge of how humans lived for most of our time on earth – living sustainably off the land\, and with equality for all regardless of gender\, age\, or ability. The Hadza are an important example for our present\, and a people who are also our best hope for a continuing tie to our past. What can this joyful\, just and sustainable society teach us about how to live now? \nProduced by: \nJon Cox is a National Geographic Explorer\, an assistant professor in the Department of Art at the University of Delaware\, Board Member of the Dorobo Fund for Tanzania and Board member of the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. Cox’s latest published work was a six-year collaborative documentary book project with hunter-gatherers in Tanzania titled Hadzabe\, By the Light of a Million Fires. Cox is a co-recipient of a National Geographic – Genographic Legacy Fund Grant to support his current collaborative cultural mapping initiative with the Ese’Eja hunter-gatherers living in the Amazonia basin of Peru. \nKatrin Redfern is a journalist and producer who has reported internationally on human rights\, anti-trafficking\, and corruption. She has written for the BBC\, The Daily Beast\, The Indypendent\, Huffington Post\, and The Phnom Penh Post among others. She has produced film (two Sundance Film Festival Official Selections)\, theater (five Tony Award nominations)\, radio\, and podcasts\, from science news to a series of international radio drama. Katrin is also an award-winning fiction writer and playwright and a longtime activist focusing on labor issues. She holds a BA from the Institute for Social Ecology\, an MA from the University of Sussex and an MSc from the London School of Economics. \nAndrew Stern is a photographer and journalist whose work has taken him to the planet’s farthest reaches on many projects. His primary areas of concentration are social and political issues\, but he has also photographed campaigns for many leaders of industry and technology. His work has won numerous awards and has appeared in Harpers\, The New York Times\, Readers Digest\, The Guardian and many other publications both domestically and internationally. He was a 2014 co-recipient of an Open Society Foundation grant for Water Warriors\, a traveling exhibition and film on indigenous resistance to fracking (Big Sky Film Festival Official Selection). He is also a founder of the photography and film stages Starr Street Studios and Be Electric Studios Brooklyn. \nIn partnership with the Gallery at Atlas Industries\, www.atlasnewburgh.com. \nContact: Katrin Redfern\, 929.264.9300\, redfern.stern@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Newburgh Candlelight Tour
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Candlelight Tour\, sponsored by the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands\, is getting ready for its big day this coming December\, with interesting and historic houses on board for viewing by the public. As usual\, the tour will commence at the beautiful historic headquarters of the Historical Society\, the Captain David Crawford House in the Newburgh Historic District. The Society will have decorated the Crawford House with beautiful natural greens\, fruits\, holly\, wreaths\, trees\, flowers\, ribbons and bows. The decorations are selected to represent how a family like the Crawfords might have presented their house to the public during a Christmas and holiday season back in the 1800’s. Each fireplace—and there are several in this beautiful home—is decorated with a separate display of natural greens and flowers. The dining room becomes a haven for homemade candy-trees and sugar cookies. The magnificent cantilevered staircase will be entwined with ropes of garlands and bows creating a dramatic sweeping presence in the main hallway. \nThis year’s tour will include 10 different homes each selected for a different reason\, says Russell Lange\, a member of the tour’s organization committee. “Either they’re architecturally important\, or they have a fabulous view of the river\, or perhaps they’re on fabulous grounds. The person that currently lives there could be an artist or someone who has a wonderful collection; there are all different reasons why we would include someone.” \nThe tour will begin at 12:00 on Sunday\, December 11 and will last until 5:00. The houses are grouped in clusters so one can park in close by and visit several houses and then drive to see another group. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 at the door of the Capt. David Crawford House\, 189 Montgomery Street\, Newburgh.\nTo purchase tickets online\, please visit the website at: http://www.newburghhistoricalsociety.com/events/candlelight-tour-of-homes/
