We will consider work that is only available for one of the evenings\, but priority acceptance is given to artists that are able to show work on both/either programs. Be sure to indicate your availability on the application. \nSmall Plates creates a growth environment by holding guided Q&A feedback sessions with the audience after each performance. All performers and choreographers are expected to remain on-site to participate in the Q&A. Local dance and artistic professionals are encouraged to attend as audience members and bring their voices to this conversation\, and to provide choreographers with valuable feedback and networking opportunities. This artist/audience interface is what makes Small Plates truly special. \nPlease submit your video by uploading it to YouTube\, Vimeo or another video service online\, and include the link in your application. Do not email your video to Small Plates. Applications without a video link will not be considered. \nAn application fee of $25.00 per piece is required. Your fee must be paid before your work will be considered. \nChoreographers who have their work chosen will be given one complimentary ticket to each performance\, and are expected to help populate the audience by bringing at least two paid patrons to each performance in which their work appears. Choreographers will also receive a video and photographs of their work after the show. \nDancers and choreographers must be available for technical rehearsal at 4:00 on performance days. \nThe deadline to apply is January 20\, 2018. SUMMARY:Early New Years Eve Celebration with NOM
DESCRIPTION:Join us in co-creating this beautiful space on the last Saturday’s of the month\, where diversity\, and relaxed\, mindful playfulness reign. We promise an extraordinary and inspiring way to bring in the New Year\, with more freedom of movement and creative possibilities! \nDecember 30th Newburgh Open Movement! \n@ Music & Art @ Raffle @ \n2:00 – 3:00 PM\nMovement Workshop with Ophra Wolf \n3:00 – 5:00 PM\nOpen Jam featuring\nLive Music with Andy Rinehart\n& Craig Chin (errant.space) \nSafe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz\n107 Broadway\, Newburgh\, NY \nOpen to all ages\, creeds\, abilities\, colors\, shapes and sizes. \nJoin us on the Last Saturdays of the month as we co-create time and space for people of all walks of life to come together and enjoy three hours playful dancing\, deep listening and mindful movement. \nThe first hour of the event is a guided warm-up and movement awareness workshop led by Ophra Wolf of Force & Flow\, followed by free and open time and space for you to move or observe as you please starting at 2 PM and featuring live music with monthly guest musicians. \nKids of all ages are welcome to the jam portion with adult supervision\, the workshop at the start is suitable for adults and teenagers. \nMovement and dance improvisation is about moving from the inside\, in a way that feels good and organic to your body\, and an Open Movement jam is a setting in which everyone is an equal part of co-creating the dance of the room. \nYou can come dance your heart out\, and you can also just come to stretch quietly\, listen\, observe\, draw and just enjoy the energy and focus of a room full of moving bodies. You can dance alone and you can dance with others\, even your stillness is part of the dance that we’ll be co-creating. \nIt’s about tuning in – to your own body\, to the space around you\, and to the people you’re sharing it with. \nThe only requirement is willingness to look\, listen and contribute your awareness – because it’s your awareness that’s making it all come to life. \nYour donation helps to keep it going! \n$5 – $10 suggested donation for the jam\, $15 for the workshop\n*NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS* \nYou can warm up your body and mind and support our wonderful sponsor\, Safe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz\, by attending a pilates class with Angela Et Newburgh from APG Pilates from 11 AM to 12 noon also at the Ritz. Proceeds go to The Ritz theater! \nThank you to our sponsors Raghaus and Force and Flow \nWe’re thrilled to announce that Newburgh Open Movement was awarded a Community Arts Grant from the Orange County New York Arts Council for 2017\, which will help us to cover 6 months of musician stipend. Many thanks to the OCAC for their support!\nWe still have lots to cover to guarantee a year full of great events and we’re relying on business support and your donations to make it happen. Donate now! \nWe’re supported by our local businesses and community members like yourself – please consider making a contribution\, the best one of all is showing up and telling your friends! If you’re interested in learning about partnering with us as a business\, please message us. \n… \nStill not sure what an Open Movement Jam is all about? \nAn Open Movement Jam is simply a space where you can move however you please in the company of others. You can bring whatever movement practice you already have – yoga\, hula hoop\, tai chi – or you can invent you own freestyle dance form. You can even take a nap. \nNervous about having to dance? You don’t. You can watch\, listen\, draw – as long as you are staying aware of yours and others’ presence in the room. It’s about tuning in – to your own body\, to the space around you\, and to the people you’re sharing it with. The only requirement is willingness to look\, listen and contribute your awareness – because it’s your awareness that’s making it all come to life. \nIf you do feel like dancing\, there will be no moves to learn or rhythm to keep up with other than your own. Dance Improvisation is about moving from the inside\, in a way that feels good and organic to your body. There is always the possibility that what feels good is to sit and watch and listen\, that’s your dance. Regardless\, you are an equal part of co-creating the dance of the room\, simply by being there and contributing your awareness.

SUMMARY:Contact Improvisation - Level II Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We’re getting ready to fly! Everyone with some experience in Contact Improvisation is welcome to join us for this Level II series. \n3 Classes:\nThursdays\, November 2 – November 16\n7 – 9 PM\nCenter for Creative Education\, Beacon \nFull series: $90\nDrop-in: $40 per class\, pre-approval required \nContact Improvisation is what happens when you learn to trust your own body and your own listening so much that you feel free to lean on someone and let them take your weight for a moment. \nIt’s a martial art whose only aim is to fight for more connection\, more pleasure and more play. \nIt’s a dance that happens all on its own – you won’t be learning any “dance moves”\, but you’ll learn a lot about how YOUR body moves and what feels best for it. \nWhether you’re relatively new* to dance and Contact Improvisation or you’re an experienced mover\, you’ll be equally challenged and thrilled by the possibilities of flight\, release\, and resistance that CI offers. You’ll gain a deep understanding of your body’s mechanics and you’ll experience the pleasure of relating through simple acts of giving and receiving weight. \nWe’ll be cultivating our ability to be alert and safe in fast moving situations – an invaluable skill on so many levels\, and one that requires strong personal commitment to mindfulness and mutual respect. Therefore\, this is not a drop-in class and commitment to the full workshop is required. \nSpace is very limited – reserve your spot ASAP! \n*If you’re completely new to CI\, this session is not the one for you. There will be another Fundamentals session in the winter of 2018\, so stay tuned. If you’re not sure whether you have “enough” experience\, send a message and we’ll talk! \nWhat people are saying: \n“My biggest take away from the class was doing something new and something I wouldn’t normally try. I met new people and was surprised at how nice and welcoming they were. It also gave me something to look forward to every week which was a plus. If anyone ever asked about the workshop\, I would completely recommend it. We had a great teacher and you shouldn’t be scared because everyone is there to relax and have fun. Everyone is learning\, just like you!” -Eric Hernandez \n“I took the CI Fundamentals workshop because I just wanted to try something new and to dance\, but it also opened up new concepts for me that I can use in my own work. I loved laughing\, and connecting to other people\, and the fact that you can do it anywhere on small scale\, like the grocery store with a friend. You can do as little or as much as you want and you can expect to be surprised by the experience.” -Page Ogden \n“I believe I have slowed down and have more focus on intention. I notice a mental shift when I’m dancing. During the 5th class\, there was a moment for me when I went outside and it was blatantly apparent I was calm and my head was so clear. Dancing meditation!” -James Morehouse \nAbout Contact Improvisation: \nContact Improvisation is “a mode of movement which is relaxed\, constantly aware and prepared\, and onflowing. As a basic focus\, the dancers remain in physical touch\, mutually supportive and innovative\, meditating upon the physical laws relating to their masses: gravity\, momentum\, inertia\, and friction. They do not strive to achieve results\, but rather\, to meet the constantly changing physical reality with appropriate placement and energy.” – that’s how Steve Paxton\, the creator of the form\, defines it! \nWhat To Expect From this Class: \nYou should expect a fun and dynamic movement class that focuses as much on mindfulness\, breath and alignment as it does on courage and play. \nI’ll be sharing exercises and practices that help to prepare your body for the dancing\, but what actually happens in a contact improvisation dance is never pre-determined or proscribed\, it depends entirely on what’s happening in the moment. The exercises come from yoga\, martial arts\, and other dance practices. \nThe class is suitable for people with some experience of CI. \nWe’ll be playing with gravity and flight and we’ll be looking for states of relaxed ease and pleasure. Most importantly\, we’ll be learning to stay safe\, alert and agile in unpredictable situations. \nIf you come regularly\, your flexibility\, strength and confidence in your physical capacity will greatly improve! \nAbout Ophra: \nOphra Wolf (www.forceandflow.com) is a dancer and performance artist\, teacher and healer dedicated to a lifelong study of movement and embodied intelligence as a vehicle for personal and cultural transformation. Contact improvisation is one of her primary practices\, and her teaching is informed by a love of creative play and infinite possibility. She weaves together foundational and technical aspects of the practice with knowledge from her advanced bodywork practice and work as an experimental theater and dance improvisation performer. She’s had the privilege of working\, studying and collaborating with luminaries of the dance and theater world and is strongly influenced by her ongoing participation since 2011 in Steve Paxton and Lisa Nelson’s Figure Space group

SUMMARY:Performance: The Dance Cartel and Storyboard P.
DESCRIPTION:Be wowed by the moves of The Dance Cartel and Storyboard P. during an exciting afternoon of dance and improvisational movement at the rooftop of 2017 ‘Outlooks’ artist Heather Hart’s ‘The Oracle of Lacuna.’ \nThe Dance Cartel is after a new brand of dance experience. Taking note of a dance community that often serves a niche audience\, the Cartel creates dances that are vibrant\, immersive\, and often participatory. Without sacrificing technical rigor or artistic ambition as a dance company\, we endeavor to employ the social nature of dance\, the charge of a party\, and the sharpness of a music video to a fresh dance vocabulary that any Joe can get down with. \nStoryboard P. is a “visual vanguard” and the recipient of a Bessie Award for Best Emerging Choreographer (2015). He has performed at Mass MOCA (2015)\, Gateway Arts Center (2017)\, Watermill Art Center (2017)\, City Center Summer Concert Series (2017); Sadler Wells in London (2012 & 2017)\, and the Newark Riverfront Park’s Dance Newark! Storyboard P. has been included in the New York Times Dance Feature\, commercials including Apple\, Lurpak and Timberland\, and video production includes work with JAY Z\, Flume & Chet Faker\, among others. He is also the subject of a documentary film entitled “Stranger in Sweden” about his experience bringing his art overseas. As the name “Storyboard P.” suggests\, he tells stories using his body to depict pictures into visual animations.

SUMMARY:August Newburgh Open Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us in co-creating this beautiful space on the last Saturday’s of the month\, where diversity\, and relaxed\, attentive playfulness reign. Creating time and space to experience your life this way is so extraordinarily satisfying and important… \nAugust 26th Newburgh Open Movement! \n@ Music & Art @ Raffle @ \n1:00 – 2:00 PM\nWorkshop with Ophra Wolf \n2:00 – 4:00 PM\nOpen Jam featuring\nLive Music with Dean Sharp\n& Craig Chin (errant.space) \nSafe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz\n107 Broadway\, Newburgh\, NY \nOpen to all ages\, creeds\, abilities\, colors\, shapes and sizes. \n$5 – $10 suggested donation for the jam\, $15 for the workshop\n*NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS* \nBefore or after the jam\, stick around for a number of other great events as part of #NewburghLastSaturdays. \nYou can warm up your body and mind and support our wonderful sponsor\, Safe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz\, by attending a pilates class with Angela Et Newburgh from APG Pilates from 11 AM to 12 noon also at the Ritz.

SUMMARY:Not an Ending at All
DESCRIPTION:a+s works\, Julia Hudak\, and special guests\ntickets available at the door\n$15\, cash only \nLive music by Julia Hudak\nhttps://juliahudak.bandcamp.com/ \nTwo dance works:\nwork-in-progress Me and the Ghost Upstairs\nand\nBody of Words \n“Me and the Ghost Upstairs” is a duet that explores the homes we build for the spirits that haunt us. Inspired by the Buddhist teachings on Hungry Ghosts and a deleted scene from Fred Astaire’s Second Chorus\, the two performers navigate an intimate world carefully guarded by a chorus of personal apparitions. The dance seeks out the hidden parts of everyday narratives and the intimate\, internal spaces we make for them. The eeriest haunting is a haunting of the home. It is unclear who is in charge. It is unclear to whom this home belongs. Threatening and yet strangely loving\, this work questions what comes after a life of haunting? What happens when a ghost dies? \nStill in development\, this work includes appearances by a chorus of spirits and re-imaginings of Astaire’s recordings by composer Matt Wiggers. \nApproximate Time: 20-30 mins \n“Body of Words” is a improvisation performance featuring a+s works and company members. A structured improvisation is set to a recording of an interview or public talk.
