Come to the 7th Annual Newburgh Volunteer Fair at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site on Saturday\, April 29th\, from 11 AM until 3 PM. Learn how you can get involved with local community organizations. Representatives from many of the non-profit organizations based in Newburgh and the surrounding area will be there with information about volunteer opportunities for teenagers\, adults and seniors. This is a chance to build useful skills\, meet new people and take a more active part in your community. Come and see what opportunity is waiting for you. All are invited to attend the Fair\, visit the tables\, learn about and make connections with these important local groups. \nThe fair is being held at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site\, the first publicly owned historic site in the nation. Support from our sponsors has made admission to the Hasbrouck House and Museum free for the day\, encouraging visitors to experience the important role Newburgh played during the War of Independence. \nMusic and refreshments will be offered. The Newburgh Volunteer Fair is a yearly event organized by Washington’s Headquarters\, Safe Harbors of the Hudson and the Newburgh Free Library. In case of inclement weather\, the Fair will be held in the Historic Green Room located in the Cornerstone Residence (rear entrance next to the Ann Street Gallery) at 104 Ann Street. For more information call 845-562-1195. \nAlso\, on the same day\, the Newburgh Urban Farming Fair will be happening at 80 Broadway\, on the corner of Broadway and Grand Street. Urban farming is a celebration of farm fun with “how-to” demos\, kids’ activities\, chickens\, bees\, goats and more! This is another opportunity you might want to support and promote that strengthens the community by working together

SUMMARY:Newburgh Candlelight Tour
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Candlelight Tour\, sponsored by the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands\, is getting ready for its big day this coming December\, with interesting and historic houses on board for viewing by the public. As usual\, the tour will commence at the beautiful historic headquarters of the Historical Society\, the Captain David Crawford House in the Newburgh Historic District. The Society will have decorated the Crawford House with beautiful natural greens\, fruits\, holly\, wreaths\, trees\, flowers\, ribbons and bows. The decorations are selected to represent how a family like the Crawfords might have presented their house to the public during a Christmas and holiday season back in the 1800’s. Each fireplace—and there are several in this beautiful home—is decorated with a separate display of natural greens and flowers. The dining room becomes a haven for homemade candy-trees and sugar cookies. The magnificent cantilevered staircase will be entwined with ropes of garlands and bows creating a dramatic sweeping presence in the main hallway. \nThis year’s tour will include 10 different homes each selected for a different reason\, says Russell Lange\, a member of the tour’s organization committee. “Either they’re architecturally important\, or they have a fabulous view of the river\, or perhaps they’re on fabulous grounds. The person that currently lives there could be an artist or someone who has a wonderful collection; there are all different reasons why we would include someone.” \nThe tour will begin at 12:00 on Sunday\, December 11 and will last until 5:00. The houses are grouped in clusters so one can park in close by and visit several houses and then drive to see another group. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 at the door of the Capt. David Crawford House\, 189 Montgomery Street\, Newburgh.\nTo purchase tickets online\, please visit the website at: http://www.newburghhistoricalsociety.com/events/candlelight-tour-of-homes/

SUMMARY:Celebrating Suffrage: Bike Pageant and Community Circle
DESCRIPTION:History\, dialogue and a renegade bike pageant meet on the streets of Newburgh on Thursday evening\, November 19th: \n120 Years ago (November of 1895)\, Newburgh was the site the NYS Women’s Suffrage Convention\, where Susan B. Anthony\, Carrie Chapman Catt and many other brilliant women gathered to engage the public in a discussion about women’s roles and rights. It was another 25 years before women gained the right to vote! \nHas the playing field since been leveled? And where has this discussion disappeared to in our current culture? \nWe’re bringing it back! \n**The Official Event**\n6 – 8 PM\nSafe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz\n\nTo commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Convention held here in Newburgh\, Safe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz will host a community circle on Thursday\, November 19 from 6 – 8 PM. \nThe circle celebrates the spirit of the 1895 event by bringing the discussion of the roles and rights of women in our current society back to Newburgh and engaging the community in dialogue through the model of community circles developed by The Restorative Center (TheRestorativeCenter.org). The event is open to all. \nThis evening is conceived and organized by independent artists Ophra Wolf and John Delk\, inspired by Johanna Yaun\, and sponsored by The Restorative Center and Safe Harbors on the Hudson. Heather Renée Russ is the artist behind the flyer. \n**The Unofficial Pageant**\n5:00 – 5:45PM \nMeet between 4:30 – 5:00PM @ Space Create to suit up in white\, then join the delegation as we all ride our bikes down Broadway from William St. past City Hall and back around to the Ritz. \nWhy? \nIn the early 1900’s\, the younger generation of women started to get more radical and visible\, organizing massive pageants with women of all ages dressed in white marching to demand their right to equal treatment. \nTo celebrate the strength and perseverance of these women\, and of all the women in our lives who have made our world a better place to live\, we’re taking to the streets for group bike ride\, and with a massive downhill swoop\, building up the energy to sustain the work of social justice in Newburgh and beyond. \nWear a white dress! (or white skirt and shirt) \nDon’t have one? Leetha Berchielli of Mrs. Max has kindly offered to make a few exquisite articles available to you\, and she can even help decorate your helmet – come to Space Create at 4:30PM the day of. Or you can bring a white sheet and wrap it around like a toga\, or ok\, if you have to wear a white shirt and light colored pants\, we’ll still take you\, but you’d look great in skirt or dress… And you can change as soon as we arrive at the Ritz. \nI’m guessing we’ll start the ride no later than 5:15 PM\, still a tiny bit of light out\, but bring your flashing bike lights and headlamps. As a group we’ll be safe and visible!
