SUMMARY:Celebrating Suffrage: Bike Pageant and Community Circle
DESCRIPTION:History\, dialogue and a renegade bike pageant meet on the streets of Newburgh on Thursday evening\, November 19th: \n120 Years ago (November of 1895)\, Newburgh was the site the NYS Women’s Suffrage Convention\, where Susan B. Anthony\, Carrie Chapman Catt and many other brilliant women gathered to engage the public in a discussion about women’s roles and rights. It was another 25 years before women gained the right to vote! \nHas the playing field since been leveled? And where has this discussion disappeared to in our current culture? \nWe’re bringing it back! \n**The Official Event**\n6 – 8 PM\nSafe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz\n\nTo commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Convention held here in Newburgh\, Safe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz will host a community circle on Thursday\, November 19 from 6 – 8 PM. \nThe circle celebrates the spirit of the 1895 event by bringing the discussion of the roles and rights of women in our current society back to Newburgh and engaging the community in dialogue through the model of community circles developed by The Restorative Center (TheRestorativeCenter.org). The event is open to all. \nThis evening is conceived and organized by independent artists Ophra Wolf and John Delk\, inspired by Johanna Yaun\, and sponsored by The Restorative Center and Safe Harbors on the Hudson. Heather Renée Russ is the artist behind the flyer. \n**The Unofficial Pageant**\n5:00 – 5:45PM \nMeet between 4:30 – 5:00PM @ Space Create to suit up in white\, then join the delegation as we all ride our bikes down Broadway from William St. past City Hall and back around to the Ritz. \nWhy? \nIn the early 1900’s\, the younger generation of women started to get more radical and visible\, organizing massive pageants with women of all ages dressed in white marching to demand their right to equal treatment. \nTo celebrate the strength and perseverance of these women\, and of all the women in our lives who have made our world a better place to live\, we’re taking to the streets for group bike ride\, and with a massive downhill swoop\, building up the energy to sustain the work of social justice in Newburgh and beyond. \nWear a white dress! (or white skirt and shirt) \nDon’t have one? Leetha Berchielli of Mrs. Max has kindly offered to make a few exquisite articles available to you\, and she can even help decorate your helmet – come to Space Create at 4:30PM the day of. Or you can bring a white sheet and wrap it around like a toga\, or ok\, if you have to wear a white shirt and light colored pants\, we’ll still take you\, but you’d look great in skirt or dress… And you can change as soon as we arrive at the Ritz. \nI’m guessing we’ll start the ride no later than 5:15 PM\, still a tiny bit of light out\, but bring your flashing bike lights and headlamps. As a group we’ll be safe and visible!

SUMMARY:Kalmar Nyckel Ship in Newburgh
DESCRIPTION:Kalmar Nyckel will sail up the Hudson River into Newburgh for the first time in its history this July\, for a weekend of day sails\, pirate adventures and guided deck tours from July 24-26. \nKalmar Nyckel is a faithful recreation of the original ship that brought the earliest settlers from Sweden to Delaware in 1638\, just a couple of decades after the Mayflower. During the same period when the Dutch were settling New Amsterdam in what is now Manhattan\, Kalmar Nyckel made four successive round trips to supply the colonists of New Sweden\, a record unchallenged by any other colonial vessel. \nKalmar Nyckel will take on passengers for two-hour day tours of the Hudson River\, sailing through some of the most scenic parts of the Hudson Valley. Sails will depart from the Riverfront Marina at 40 Front Street\, Newburgh\, NY. Each day the ship is in port\, the crew of the ship will offer guided deck tours during specific times. The deck tours are $10/adults and $6/children age 17 and under. \nKalmar Nyckel offers two distinct sailing experiences. On “day sails\,” passengers are invited to work alongside volunteer crew as they haul the lines\, raise the sails\, and learn first-hand just how hard it was to cross the Atlantic in the 17thcentury … unless they’d rather just bring along a picnic\, enjoy the sights and sounds of the water and watch the crew do all the work. \nYounger sailors might prefer the more spirited “pirate sails\,” where the crew get into character with pirate tales\, scavenger hunts and the raising of the Jolly Roger. (The original Kalmar Nyckel was never a pirate vessel\, serving instead as a trader\, warship and colonial vessel\, but today’s crew love playing the part.) \nFor public sail tickets and more information about specific sails and times\, visit www.kalmarnyckel.org or contact the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation office at (302) 429-7447. Ticket prices are $50 for adults and $45 for children and youth ages 17 and younger. To book a sail online\, visit http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/BookASail.asp.The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation preserves and promotes the cultural and maritime heritage of Delaware for the education and enrichment of all

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Newburgh & Its Waterfront in Earlier Days
DESCRIPTION:Located on the west shore of the Hudson River\, Newburgh\, NY is a city steeped in history. During his 1609 exploration of the area that would become Newburgh\, Henry Hudson described it as a “pleasant place to build a town\,” according to City of Newburgh Historian Mary McTamaney. Indeed\, General George Washington made the Hasbrouck House in Newburgh his headquarters in 1783\, the final year of the American Revolution. \nSituated 60 miles north of New York City and 90 miles south of Albany\, the city was a common port for steamboats traveling up and down the river between those cities. The waterfront area and Broadway became and were bustling places of commerce for many years from the mid-1800s until the malls drew businesses away in the early 1970s. Kaplan Hall\, located on the SUNY Orange campus at the corner of Grand and First Streets\, has two photo exhibits of scenes of Newburgh during that time period. \nIn the glass vitrine case stationed in the Foyer of the Mindy Ross Gallery at Kaplan Hall\, an exhibit of photos\, Newburgh & Its Waterfront in Earlier Days\, depicts nearby streets and parks as well as waterfront scenes and will be on display through the end of July. In addition\, images of the Old City Courthouse\, now the Heritage Center\, and its bell\, are on exhibit in the glass vitrine case which is next to the beautifully restored courthouse bell at the Grand Street entrance of Kaplan Hall. All of the images have been provided by Historian McTamaney. \nDuring June and July\, regular visiting hours are Monday through Thursday\, 9am to 8pm. Also\, the exhibits will be on view for visitors touring galleries on Last Saturday\, June 27 from 6 to 8pm. All exhibits are free and open to the public. \nQuestions may be directed to cultural@sunyorange.edu  and (845)341-4891. Also\, see  www.sunyorange.edu/culturalaffairs

What was the Headquarters like during its early years as a historic site? Interpretive Programs Assistant Aaron Robinson will talk about that and more in the program “Capturing Our Past: Visiting Washington’s Headquarters in the mid-late 19th Century” to be held on June 20th at 11am and 2pm\, and again on June 21st at 2pm. \nHear the story of how Washington’s Headquarters came to be purchased by New York State and why it was saved before so many other landmarks. Then explore how Headquarters functioned once it was open and how visitors would have experienced the site over 150 years ago. \nThis presentation will be given as part of New York State’s Path Through History Weekend\, which showcases the state’s diverse history. The program is also offered in conjunction with the city-wide festival\, Newburgh Illuminated\, on June 20th. Due to all of the activity surrounding the site on that day\, please call the site at 845-562-1195 for directions\, parking information and further details.
