SUMMARY:George Washington's Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come to Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site and help us celebrate George Washington’s Birthday not just one day – but three!!! The event will be held February 17th\, 18th and 19th\, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm each day. \nThere will be music\, military demonstrations\, historical presentations\, and a take-home craft every day. Join us in singing “Happy Birthday” to The General\, eat a piece of his birthday cake and enjoy all that each day has to offer. \nThe General will be greeting visitors in the historic headquarters with balladeer Thad McGregor offering musical entertainment in the dining room. On the grounds\, reenactors will be performing military drills culminating at the end of the day with a review of the troops by the General himself. Troops that will be present each day are: Saturday – the 5th New York Regiment\, Sunday – 4th Connecticut Regiment and Lamb’s Artillery\, and Monday the 5th Connecticut Regiment. \nThe museum building will host a craft for visitors of all ages\, along with offering interesting historical presentations. One such talk on Saturday will be about Mount Gulian during the Revolutionary War\, and another will touch upon enslavement in the Hudson Valley. On Sunday\, learn about George Washington’s health while residing in this area. On Monday\, a reenactor will share her insights into portraying Martha Washington for a contemporary audience. \nFor additional schedule details and information\, call 845-562-1195. \nAdmission for all three days is free\, though donations are appreciated. \nSponsorship for this program is provided by the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands\, Palisades Interstate Park Commission and the Palisades Parks Conservancy.

DESCRIPTION:This program commemorates the 1895 Suffragette Convention in Newburgh\, which took place at the Palatine Hotel now the site of the Newburgh Free Library. The convention marked a transition in leadership and continued the momentum for women obtaining the right to vote until Nov. 6\, 1917. \nThis multi-part project includes a Bike Parade at 1 p.m. Whether you’re a biker\, dog walker\, or skater\, wear all white and ride down Broadway from the Court House to City Hall. \nAt 2 p.m. the “Community Convening” at the Library features a panel of experts who will discuss the history of the suffragette movement\, the role of black suffragettes\, and what it means for civic engagement today. Among the images we will be showing are class photos of the children of the Grand street school\, graduating students of Newburgh Academy\, Newburgh’s baseball team and fire departments\, ship builders and other workers\, early documents from the Newburgh Glebe dating as far back as the late 1700’s\, and much more. \nThe images will be presented by Hudson River Valley Heritage (HRVH; www.hrvh.org\,) a digital library that provides online visitors with free access to historical materials from the collections of libraries\, archives\, museums and historical societies located in the Hudson Valley. DESCRIPTION:With original documents as your guide\, create your own 18th century style letter using a quill pen\, just as General Washington’s aides-de-camp did while at Headquarters Newburgh. This all-ages quill pen writing workshop will be held at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site\, Saturday and Sunday\, October 7th and 8th\, at 2 PM each day.   \nThe fee is $3.00 per person and includes your own quill pen to take home. Reservations are recommended as space is limited. Please note that the ink being used is permanent. For over thirty years\, saxophonist Eric Person has been committed to composing\, recording and performing contemporary American music. He’s featured as a leader and sideman on more than 50 recordings. His broad range of experience with Dave Holland\, McCoy Tyner\, Chico Hamilton\, Houston Person\, John Hicks and many others have all contributed greatly to his mature alto and soprano sound and his skills as an arranger and composer.\nRuss Musto of All About Jazz Magazine stated “Person is more then fine; he’s a major talent of his generation.” This program will feature the Standards\, blues\, bop and original compositions. SUMMARY:Kites Over the Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Be part of hundreds of flying kites at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site\, in Newburgh\, on Saturday\, September 23rd\, 2 to 4 PM\, during “Kites Over the Hudson\,” our annual Hudson River Valley Ramble event. \nFree kites will be given to the first 150 children ages 15 and under courtesy of the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands. Refreshments will be available to all. \nThe historic Hasbrouck House served as Headquarters for General Washington\, and was also used by his wife Martha\, several of his aides\, guards\, slaves\, and servants. It was here that General Washington announced the ceasefire ending the fighting of the Revolutionary War\, authored some of his thoughts for the new republic\, and created the Badge of Military Merit\, forerunner of the Purple Heart. So much history is within the house’s walls – the first publicly owned historic site in the nation\, which opened in 1850. \nAdmission to the Museum and Historic Hasbrouck House\, open 11 AM until 5 PM\, is free that day compliments of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation. The Badge\, the first award of its kind to honor enlisted personnel\, evolved into the Purple Heart\, an award given today to officers and enlisted personnel wounded or killed in the defense of our country. Listen to the exploits of the three recipients of the Badge\, stories of daring\, courage and patriotism. \nIn the years that followed\, the Badge was forgotten by many in the military. However\, there were still those who wished to honor Washington’s Badge of Military Merit. Listen to how their interest\, knowledge and tenacity led to the creation of the Purple Heart\, an award now given to those who are wounded or killed in the service of their country; thereby\, still honoring those who are daring\, courageous and patriotic. \nWhile at the site to celebrate the creation of the Badge of Military Merit\, you are invited to make your own Badge to take home!\nThe program is free with Museum admission.
