SUMMARY:From Badge of Military Merit to Purple Heart
DESCRIPTION:Come to Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site\, in Newburgh\, on Saturday\, August 12th\, at 2:00 PM for “From Badge of Military Merit to Purple Heart.” Hear how and why General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit\, on August 7\, 1783\, 235 years ago\, during the last days of the Revolutionary War. The Badge\, the first award of its kind to honor enlisted personnel\, evolved into the Purple Heart\, an award given today to officers and enlisted personnel wounded or killed in the defense of our country. However\, there were still those who wished to honor Washington’s Badge of Military Merit. Listen to how their interest\, knowledge and tenacity led to the creation of the Purple Heart\, an award now given to those who are wounded or killed in the service of their country; thereby\, still honoring those who are daring\, courageous and patriotic. \nWhile at the site to celebrate the creation of the Badge of Military Merit\, you are invited to make your own Badge to take home!\nThe program is free with Museum admission. Site hours are 11 AM until 5 PM. For further information please call 845-562-1195.

For more information please call (845) 561-2585 or visit their website\, newburghhistoricalsociety.com.

SUMMARY:African-American History "In Washington's Shadow" Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:New York State once had more slaves than Georgia\, with the largest concentration of those slaves located in the Hudson Valley. “In Washington’s Shadow” follows the story of the Alsdorf family\, starting with George Alsdorf\, who was a slave until he was freed in 1827. After gaining his freedom\, Alsdorf and his family opened a series of businesses in the city\, and also aided runaway slaves as superintendents in the Underground Railroad. \nRecent Manhattanvill graduate Tashae Smith led residents to the site of George Alsdorf’s home where he hid slaves\, the music and dance school his grandsons opened\, the colored school his son Dubois helped shut down by fighting for his sons’ educational rights\, and the AME Zion Church\, the oldest African American church in Newburgh. \nCost of the tour is $10\, Children under 12 are free.

Come to the 7th Annual Newburgh Volunteer Fair at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site on Saturday\, April 29th\, from 11 AM until 3 PM. Support from our sponsors has made admission to the Hasbrouck House and Museum free for the day\, encouraging visitors to experience the important role Newburgh played during the War of Independence. \nMusic and refreshments will be offered. The Newburgh Volunteer Fair is a yearly event organized by Washington’s Headquarters\, Safe Harbors of the Hudson and the Newburgh Free Library. In case of inclement weather\, the Fair will be held in the Historic Green Room located in the Cornerstone Residence (rear entrance next to the Ann Street Gallery) at 104 Ann Street. For more information call 845-562-1195. \nAlso\, on the same day\, the Newburgh Urban Farming Fair will be happening at 80 Broadway\, on the corner of Broadway and Grand Street. Urban farming is a celebration of farm fun with “how-to” demos\, kids’ activities\, chickens\, bees\, goats and more! This is another opportunity you might want to support and promote that strengthens the community by working together
