DESCRIPTION:Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site is\, once again\, offering “Through Different Lenses: Two Views of Headquarters.” This event premiered in July and sold out\, so we’re doing it again. \nThis special event focuses on the headquarters during its early years as a historic site. It consists of a brief talk\, followed by a special tour using stereographic views\, allowing the visitor to experience the rooms of the headquarters as they would have seen them in the late 1800’s. Compare these 3D views to how headquarters is set up today to see how much has changed. Each visitor will also receive a special souvenir to take home! \nThese special tours will be held at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM\, on August 22nd\, at a cost of $5.00 per person. Space is limited for the special tour\, so please reserve your spot by calling the site at 845-562-1195. \nThe site\, which includes the Museum housing the multi-award winning exhibit “Unpacked & Rediscovered: Selections from Washington’s Headquarters’ Collection\,” and the standard tour of the headquarters\, is also open on August 22nd from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. DESCRIPTION:The second part of the joint program by the Newburgh Historical Society and St. George’s Episcopal Church continues on August 2nd at 3:00 p.m. with a history talk about the Rev. John Brown. During the first part of their partnership\, over 100 members of the public toured through the historic St. George’s Cemetery\, which was founded by the Rev. Brown in 1838. The talk\, “A Man for Our Time: The Rev. Dr. John Brown\, D.D.\,” will be presented by Madelaine Piel\, historian\, genealogist and a Rev. Brown descendant. \nJoin them as they explore the life of this notable Newburgh citizen whose life spanned the birth of the nation and through the Gilded Age. He founded the Newburgh Horticultural Society\, was involved in the founding of St. Luke’s Hospital\, welcomed American Revolution General Lafayette during his visit to America in 1824\, and from his garden on First Street bloomed the historic neighborhood known as “Quality Row.” \nThe talk will take place in the John Brown Room of St. George’s Church\, located on 105 Grand Street\, Newburgh. Admission is $5 per person and money collected will be directed to the care of St. George’s Cemetery. SUMMARY:Communications Master Class with Rick Zolzer
DESCRIPTION: On Thursday\, March 5\, 2015 at 7pm\, he will give a master class in communications entitled\, The Journey from Class Clown to VP. During the class he will discuss his method of assessing and reshaping and thereby attaining his goals. He will enumerate the many positions he has held and how his communications skills opened many doors for him. \nThe master class will take place in the Orange County Trust Company Great Room in Kaplan Hall. The session is free and open to the public.  \nMany minor league baseball fans will recognize Zolzer as being the entertaining announcer at the Hudson Valley Renegades games. He has been with the HV Renegades for 18 years and is now the vice-president. During his time with the baseball club\, he was in charge of the Renegades’ special events department. When he had that position\, he was responsible for having raised enough money to give away over $500\,000 to local kids and family initiatives. Along the way\, he has been a radio sports broadcaster at WPDH for 20 years and WRWD for 2 years. In addition\, he was the New Jersey Nets public address (PA) announcer for 3 years and announced the National Basketball Association (NBA) finals 2 years in a row. He also was the Army Football PA announcer for 7 years. To keep his sports skills up\, he coached baseball\, football\, and basketball at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie for 6 years and football at Marist College for 3 years. Because he enjoys entertaining people\, he figured he could create a company that would afford him the opportunity to perform\, entertain\, and earn a salary.  Zolz Entertainment\, a DJ Company\, was launched 30 years ago and continues to be a strong business in that niche industry.

SUMMARY:Lecture: HV From Howling Wilderness to Vacation Destination
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, February 17\, 2015 at 7pm\, Professor Charles Mitchell\, PhD\, will give a lecture entitled\, Nature: From Howling Wilderness to Vacation Destination.  He will explain how the Hudson Valley region that was once thought of as a “howling wilderness” has developed into a tourist destination.  The setting for this presentation is Kaplan Hall’s Orange County Trust Company Great Room\, which is well-suited to complement the topic because it has beautiful views of the Hudson River. \n“Beginning with perceptions of the American landscape as a howling wilderness\, a wasteland to be tamed and transformed\,” states Dr. Mitchell\, “I will trace the social\, cultural and economic forces that led to wild nature being seen as an asset to be experienced and preserved.”  “Drawing on landscape painting\, photography\, travelers’ accounts\, and other sources\,” he continues\, “the lecture will explore the evolution of American attitudes towards nature.”  Key topics and figures will include the sublime\, romanticism\, Henry David Thoreau\, Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School\, John Muir\, Ansel Adams\, and the Lorax. \nCharles Mitchell\, Professor of American Studies\, has been on the faculty at Elmira College since 1993.  He received his BA in Sociology from Williams College and his PhD in American Studies from Claremont Graduate University.  He teaches a wide variety of courses in American cultural history\, with specific interests in environmental history\, the history of ideas about nature\, and the representation of the landscape in literature and art.  He was born in Brooklyn and raised in Lynbrook on Long Island. \nThe presentation is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities\, Speakers in the Humanities. \nKaplan Hall is located at the corner of First and Grand Streets\, Newburgh.  Free and secure parking is available in the Kaplan Hall garage accessible from First Street.
