SUMMARY:Newburgh Slow School
DESCRIPTION:“Newburgh Slow School”\nSunday\, December 10\, 2017\n12:00pm – 6:00pm\nPresented by Eco Practicum\nPart of the “Land and Time” exhibition organized by Momenta Art at Atlas Studios\n11 Spring St\, Newburgh\, NY\, 12550 \nHow does a city change? What are the relationships between the geologies and geographies of Newburgh? \nJoin Eco Practicum\, an artist-run school for ecological justice\, for a day-long conversation with some of Newburgh’s artists\, real estate developers\, historians\, activists\, and citizens as we meander through\, around\, and within questions that shape the landscapes and timescapes of this Hudson River hub. \nNewburgh Slow School takes place over five hours\, and is a conversational practice of bringing together many different voices over a prolonged period to open up fresh areas of inquiry. Every hour\, we introduce new invited guests who will act as thematic anchors. These guests prompt a discussion about themes on which they have expertise and experience. People are welcome to leave or join the discussion freely\, and stay for as long as they wish. An audio recording from this event will serve as both a record of and an intervention in the ongoing development of place and culture in Newburgh. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nOur guests include:\n12:30pm-1:30pm: Johanna F. Yaun\, Orange County Historian \n1:30pm-2:30pm\nVincent Cianni\, Newburgh Community Photo Project\nGeremy Ourstacher\, Music Producer\nPhoenix Gayle\, Newburgh Community Photo Project \n2:30pm-3:30pm: Rae Leiner\, United Way \n3:30-4:30pm: Philippe Pierre\, Business Owner \n“Newburgh Slow School” is part of the Land and Time exhibition organized by Momenta Art at Atlas Studios. The artists in the exhibition confront monumental transformations through video\, sculpture\, performance\, and painting\, embracing time as a palpable element in their work. They mine forgotten histories or expose imagined landscapes\, reminding us that every “landscape is not a record but a recording\,” polyvalent and multivocal. \nMore info about Eco Practicum: http://www.ecopracticum.com/\nMore info about Momenta Art: http://www.momentaart.org/\nMore info about Atlas Studios: http://www.atlasnewburgh.com/

SUMMARY:Art Game - An Unknown Eames Design
DESCRIPTION:One of the earliest consumer designs in interactive multimedia\, and the first in arts education (for learning Impressionist painters)\, the “Art Game” is also notable as one the last completed projects from the legendary designers Charles and Ray Eames completed before his death in 1978. Funded by IBM as a research project long before the advent of the internet\, the “game” was designed to guide viewers to recognize the styles of Impressionist painters by combining systematic game rules with skillfully written responses to user “guesses.” Presented by Jim Hoekema\, a Newburgh resident of nearly 20 years\, who led the Art Game project at the Eames office 40 years ago.

SUMMARY:1950s & Nostalgia: In Search of Greatness in the "Golden Age"
DESCRIPTION:Why do film and television love to paint the 1950’s as the American utopia? What is it about this era that gives instant nostalgia (even for those who weren’t alive during the 50’s)? \nThe United States experienced the highest standard of living of any nation in the history of human civilization in the 1950s. But the decade wasn’t golden for everyone. \nJoin us for Think Olio’s Newburgh launch on the evening of August 26th at Atlas Studios! We’ll have a lecture from Professor Lawrence Cappello\, live music from Bartise and cold complimentary craft beer from Newburgh Brewing! \nRSVP: http://www.thinkolio.org/olios/1950s-nostalgia-search-greatness-golden-age/

SUMMARY:History of Stewart Field
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands will present noted New Windsor Town Historian Glenn Marshall who will give a lecture with power-point pictures of Stewart Field on Sunday\, August 20\, at 3PM at the Heritage Center\, 123 Grand Street in Newburgh. Marshall has a treasure trove of photos going back to when the airport was the City Airport for the Newburgh area\, and was home to bi-planes. Later\, when the field was taken over by the U.S. Air Force\, jets replaced the bi-planes and local Newburghers became familiar with the sound of roaring fighter-jets flying over the city and the Hudson Valley. The original owners of the property\, the Newburgh Stewart family\, lived in the heart of the City of Newburgh\, and gave the property to the City for use as an airport. It has been named after the family ever since. Marshall’s talk will cover the history of the field\, and the changes it brought about to the area. His talk last year on the history of the Newburgh shipbuilding industry was a very popular one\, drawing a large crowd to the Heritage Center.
