SUMMARY:Newburgh Literary Festival: Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Newburgh Literary Festival\nWriting Workshops\, Sunday\, October 31\, 2021\nBelow is in the information on each workshop including day\, date\, time\, workshop description and author bio. Each workshop costs $25 and there is a maximum of 12 seats in each workshop. All three workshops take place in the Lobby at the Ritz\, located at 107 Broadway\, Newburgh\, NY 12550. \nDay/Date/Time: Sunday\, October 31\, 2021 10AM to 12 noon\nAuthor Name: Drew Morrison\nAuthor Bio: Drew Morrison has been making drawings\, illustrations and comics all his life. Past clients include Buzzfeed\, Esquire\, Nike\, Scholastic\, ABKCO Records\, DailyCandy\, Gallery1988\, Make Magazine\, Neverstop and Skadden. \nWorkshop Description: BROKENLAND creator Drew Morrison will be discussing what it’s like to write\, draw\, color\, produce\, crowdfund and distribute a self-published comic book. Drew will have the students create a short comic strip to take with them. As he creates silent comics that don’t include dialogue\, it will be their decision to add words if they wish. \nDay/Date/Time: Sunday\, October 31\, 2021 1 – 3PM\nAuthor Name: David Surface\nAuthor Bio: Instructor David Surface is a professional author and writing instructor with over thirty years of experience leading writing programs for all ages. He is the author of Terrible Things\, a collection of short stories published by Black Shuck Books\, about which author Laura Mauro said\, “Compassionate\, astute\, and beautifully crafted\, these are horror stories with soul.” Learn more about David and his writing at http://www.davidsurface.net \nWorkshop Description: WRITING GHOST STORIES: a discussion and workshop\nPeople have been telling ghost stories for thousands of years. What is it about ghost stories that appeals to our imagination and emotions? How can we create new ghost stories that don’t feel like copies of old ones\, but feel new\, creative\, alive––and still scary? In this special two-hour workshop\, we’ll look at the evolution of ghost stories and discuss what gives them their lasting power. We’ll also look at how our personal experiences can be crafted into ghostly writing\, then try those techniques ourselves and share the results in a relaxed and supportive workshop setting. \nDay/Date/Time: Sunday\, October 31\, 2021 3:30 – 5:30PM.\nAuthor Name: Shane Bly Killoran\nAuthor Bio: Shane Bly Killoran received her B.F.A in Acting from New York University with a heavy concentration in Women’s Studies. After acting for several years in New York and Los Angeles\, she realized she enjoyed the rehearsal process far more than performing. This realization took her to the University of London where she pursued post-graduate work in theatre including her Doctoral\ncandidacy which focused primarily on devised performance. Upon her return from London\, Shane produced television for several years. She has since left the world of TV production to focus full-time on writing and her theatrical projects. \nShane served as Co-Creator and Dramaturg for the Private Theatre’s site-specific production of Strindberg’s\, Playing with Fire at\, The Box in NYC. In 2013\, she adapted and served as production Dramaturg for the Indian play\, Sakaram Binder at MAD Playhouse Theater. In July of 2016\, Nepenthe\, a play centered around the brothel at Auschwitz\, she conceived\, co-created\, dramaturged and produced\, premiered at the Women and War Festival in London\, United Kingdom. In 2018\, Shane was an artist in residence at the Marble House Project with the Private Theatre for dramaturgy. \nNepenthe is a 2021 grant recipient from the Jewish Heritage Fund and will be premiering in New York in 2022. She is also in development for a theatrical piece (title TBD) being devised to accompany a photography exhibit throughout its 2-year European museum tour in 2022. \nWorkshop Description:\nThrough a dramaturgical lens\, utilizing classical and modern play passages\, the workshop will explore how dramaturgy can be used to breakdown and inform the narrative. This specific kind of analysis specifically demonstrates how the mechanisms of story operate for both play and prose writing. From there participants will then craft a piece of text\, applying the discovered tools to their own work.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first of a monthly reading series to take place in the Gallery at Atlas\, curated by Ruth Danon. \nOur first event features renowned authors Laura Sims & Julie Chibbaro\, bios to follow: \nLaura Sims will be reading from her novel “Looker” \nLaura Sims is the author of “Looker”\, a debut novel\, and four books of poetry\, including “Staying Alive”\, “My god is this a man “\, “Stranger “\, and “Practice\, Restraint”. She has published individual poems in Black Clock\, Boston Review\, Conjunctions\, Denver Quarterly\, Gulf Coast\, Fence\, jubilat\, New Republic\, and numerous other journals. She has written book reviews and essays for a number of journals\, including Boston Review\, New England Review\, The Review of Contemporary Fiction\, Poetry Foundation\, Jacket\, and Rain Taxi\, and has been a Featured Writer for the Poetry Foundation’s Harriet blog. A native of Richmond\, Virginia\, Sims attended the College of William and Mary as an undergraduate; she later received her MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) at University of Washington in Seattle. Sims was awarded a 2006 US-Japan Creative Artist Exchange Fellowship\, and since 2003 she has taught creative writing and English at Baruch College\, NYU-SPS\, Poets House\, and other institutions. Sims is Editor-at-Large for The Scofield and a co-editor of Instance Press. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Queens College. \nReview of “Looker” by Mona Awad\, author of 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl \n“With an agile precision reminiscent of Lydia Davis\, Laura Sims captures the obsessiveness of a woman who unravels after the collapse of her marriage. A taut\, gripping portrait\, all the more sinister for its elegance.” \nJulie Chibbaro will be reading from her book “Deadly”. \nJulie Chibbaro is the award-winning author of three books: Into the “Dangerous World”\, a novel about a girl artist on the NY streets in 1984\, “Deadly”\, a medical mystery about the hunt for Typhoid Mary in 1906\, and “Redemption” a historical novel about a girl’s unintended trip to the New World in 1524. \n“Deadly” won the 2011 National Jewish Book Award\, and was Top 10 on the American Library Association’s Amelia Bloomer Project list. It was named a Bank Street Best Book\, and an Outstanding Science Trade Book by the National Science Teachers Association and is now part of many schools’ curriculum. Redemption was nominated for the Illinois HS Book Award\, and won the 2005 American Book Award. \nReview of “Deadly” by NYT Sunday Book Review \n“Paced like a medical thriller\, “Deadly” is the rare Y.A. novel in which a girl’s intellectual interests trump adolescent romance. A 16-year-old Jewish tenement dweller in 1906 New York pines away days at a finishing school on scholarship and nights helping midwife young mothers. When she quits school to assist the Department of Health and Sanitation in its pursuit of “Typhoid Mary\,” she is awakened to nascent opportunities for women in science.”
