The band has been performing together for years \, and play together with synergy and thoughtful arrangements that reimagine the music in a way that defines their own musical territory. \nVirtually any type of music across the musical landscape is fair game: from the Beatles to Bartok to Bill Monroe\, with excursions into Latin\, Jazz and Celtic and even Swedish music\, with something to offer every member of the listening audience. DESCRIPTION:The Chris Parker Septet: JAZZ ~ Funk\, Latin\, Straight Upconcert will dazzle the evening of May 3\, 2019 at the Orange Bank & Trust Co Great Room in Kaplan Hall which has two and a half story windows overlooking the Hudson River. Beginning at 7:30pm\, composer/pianist/professor and director of jazz studies at SUNY Orange\, Chris Parker will play while leading his Septet in performing original compositions plus some new surprises – new works – made for this occasion by Chris Parker.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHis ensemble is composed of spectacular musicians who are engaging and enthusiastic as well as at the top of their game: Matt Hong is accomplished on alto sax and clarinet; Carl Maraghi is fabulous on baritone sax and bass clarinet; Marshall Gilkes is superb on trombone; multi-instrumentalist Rob Thomas is fluent on cello and bass; however his five-string violin speaks a unique language; Paul Rostock on acoustic and electric basses is a well-seasoned\, very versatile player; and Marko Marcinko is accomplished on drums and piano and has played with Parker as well as his own Latin group for many years and also directs jazz studies at Penn State. Chris Parker is playing the baby grand. DESCRIPTION:$5 entry at door\, kids under 10 with adult free \nKen Butler’s Voices of Anxious Objects \nThe artist-musician performs mesmerizing world textures and driving melodic grooves with passion and purpose on an amazing arsenal of amplified hybrid string instruments made from household objects and tools. Duchampian Dada meets Hybrid Hindu Hendrix as function and form collide in an environment of hyperactive hardware. \nHe has been featured in exhibitions and performances worldwide including The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam\, The Prada Foundation in Venice (as part of the “Art or Sound” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014)\, The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg\, Mass Moca\, and The Kitchen\, The Brooklyn Museum\, Lincoln Center and The Metropolitan Museum in New York City as well as in Canada\, South America\, Thailand\, and Japan. \nHis works have been reviewed in The New York Times\, The Village Voice\, Artforum\, Smithsonian\, and Sculpture Magazine and have been featured on PBS\, CNN\, MTV\, and NBC\, including a live appearance on The Tonight Show. Awards include fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission\, the New York Foundation for the Arts\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Pollack/Krasner Foundation. He won first prize in the 2016 international Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at Georgia Tech University. \nKen Butler studied viola as a child and maintained an interest in music while studying visual arts in France\, at Colorado College\, and Portland State University where he completed his MFA in painting. \nHe lives and works in Williamsburg\, Brooklyn.

DESCRIPTION:On Sat.\, Oct 13 from 6-9pm\, the Shelter House Café in Newburgh’s Downing Park\, and the Orange County Arts Council will host an intimate and fun ‘friendraiser’ cabaret evening. The Cabaret evening launches the NEW Fall/Winter Music Series at the café\, which will be open on Saturdays from 6-9pm. \nTHE OCT 13 SHOW\, “DOING IT FOR LOVE AND TAPAS\,”’ was the brainchild of Pint-Sized Polly\, a local singer named for the Downing Park pond\, and Keith Nieto\, Newburgh’s inimitable tastemaker\, known for his resonant voice and bighearted style. “After all\,” says Keith “we really want this to be a success for the SHELTER HOUSE CAFE AND ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL. They need people’s support—As for us singers\,” quips Keith\, “we do it for love and tapas!” The featured performers will include pianist Mr Richard Wiggins\, a classic NY jazz performer well known for his improv skills and broad repertoire of Jazz and Blues American Standards\, and singer of “American standards from torchy to lyrical\,” Kathy Lawrence who is part of the much-loved a cappella jazz quartet Polka Dots and Moonbeams\, and who regularly performs in NYC at ‘The Duplex’ and other cabaret venues worldwide. \nTICKETS FOR THE EVENING ARE $15. PER PERSON AND INCLUDE ONE FREE DRINK. A wine bar\, tapas\, and single entrée menu (TBA) will also be available for purchase.
