SUMMARY:Urgent Public Hearing - Permit for Private Black Top Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC HEARING\nTUESDAY\, JULY 16\, 2019\n7:30 P.M.\nActivity Center // 401 Washington St \nOn Tuesday a public hearing will take place regarding the granting of a special use permit to turn green view lands zoned for low residential (adjacent to Newburgh’s Historic District) into a private use black top parking lot for Regal Bag. \nPlease join us in speaking out against this “special use permit” and remind the City of Newburgh officials and the members of the Planning Board that according to the code\, they are subject to uphold\, this project should in no way shape or form be approved. \nBelow you will find key points pulled directly from the City of Newburgh code that support the REJECTION of this special use application.\n———————————————————- \n“The City of Newburgh land use regulations are designed to allow a variety of uses of land\, provided that those uses ” \n1 – Do not adversely affect neighboring properties\, the natural environment\, or the character of the City. \n2 – Do not impair the integrity or character of the zone or adjoining zones nor be detrimental to the public health\, morals or welfare. \n3 – Be in conformity with adopted planning and policy documents\, including\, but not limited to:\n(a) The City of Newburgh Master Plan\n(b) The City of Newburgh Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan \n4 – Do not interfere with or diminish the value of adjoining property. \n5 – Mitigate potential adverse impacts and preserve or enhance the character of the City of Newburgh \n7 – Will not result in excessive off-premises noise\, dust\, odors\, solid waste\, or glare or create any public or private nuisances. \n8 – Ensure that these uses are appropriate to their surroundings and consistent with the purposes of this chapter \nAs you see – the code is actually written to PROTECT residents\, homeowners and the community at large from projects just like this. \nHOW CAN YOU HELP/!?!? \n1. SHOW UP & SPEAK OUT!\n2. Inform your neighbors!!!!!!!!!!\n3. Prove your argument!!!!!!!!\nFor example –\n1 – Do you know an assessor?\nIt would be helpful if we have written statements from a few assessors that say this project will devalue adjacent properties.\n2 – Outline “quoting master plan doc” how this project is not inline.\n3 – Outline “quoting NLWRP” how it is not inline.\n4 – Outline how it is not inline with CAC guidelines\n5 – Outline how it will impair the the integrity & character of historic district ( letter from historic board?) (historic society?)\n6 – Provide numbers outlining the loss of tax revenue by creating a private use parking lot as opposed to what it is zoned for low res.\n7 – Provide map showing parking to public use space ratio on the waterfront. (It’s about 90% parking fyi)\nMake the argument that by approving this project they are setting a precedence to approve parking all over the hillside greatly impacting the character of the city.\n8 – How will this project diminish the quality of your life if you live in or own a home adjacent to this parking lot. Light. noise\, emissions\, loss of habitat. Losing green to unguarded open space makes properties more vulnerable to break ins and theft. Removes noise buffer from road.\n9 – etc etc etc \nPlease use the discussion to share your ideas and findings \nInformation about Planning Board rules and procedures can be found in Chapter 300 (Zoning)\, Articles XI and XII. See below for a link to Chapter 300 of the City Code\nhttps://ecode360.com/10875666 \nSubmission and related documents here\nhttps://www.cityofnewburgh-ny.gov/planning-board/pages/special-projects \nPlanning Board Agenda\nhttps://www.cityofnewburgh-ny.gov/sites/newburghny/files/agendas/07-16-19_-_pb_agenda.pdf?fbclid=IwAR14f1zOD0MhnmQQCiN7olgINoEOqsRyGJhM_tLmkQTfosOjiUlrF4I848U

SUMMARY:Mark Makers – Exhibit Opening and Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery is pleased to announce our newest exhibition MARK MAKERS\, a group exhibition that examines the practice of drawing as an instinctive mode of creative expression\, with an opening reception on Saturday\, June 15 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nThe MARK MAKERS exhibition is all about drawing. This exhibit brings together a distinctive selection of over forty-five drawings by nineteen artists\, with explorations in graphite\, pastel\, watercolor\, ink and mixed media\, which investigates the medium of drawing through the use of various surfaces\, compositions and scale. \nDrawing has a long history\, beginning around thirty thousand years ago with wall drawings of southern France’s Chauvet Cave and later the Paleolithic cave drawings of Lascaux. As an artistic medium\, it remained popular throughout antiquity and reached exulted heights during the Renaissance. Today\, drawing continues to prevail in contemporary art universities and artist studios\, as a chief means of instruction and self-expression\, by which the tradition of art is passed from generation to generation.\nOn view\, visitors can see a display of works that brings together artists of all schools\, who use drawing as their primary medium. The exposition showcases a plethora of practices and approaches to drawing\, from the classical traditions to the more experimental styles. These works celebrate the possibilities of drawing using both traditional and non-traditional mark making methods\, while addressing subjects as portraiture\, narratives\, figurative work\, interiors\, and abstractions\, distinguished by the diverse quality of line. Whether the drawings feature virtuosity and esthetic refinement or are spontaneous and coarse\, the artists’ varied practices have one object in common\, to promote mark making as a constructive exploration of self-expression.\nFeatured Artists: Joan Belmar\, Geraldo Castro\, Jody Christian\, Angela Cunningham\, Brett Eberhardt\, Marguerite French\, Lauren Scavo-Fulk\, Patricia Bellan-Gillen\, Jason John\, Kirsten Kucer\, David Lantow\, Julie Lindell\, Jo Manglia\, Sarah Petruziello\, Ethan Price\, Beverly Ress\, Patricia Schappler\, Terri Vargas and Daniel Weiner. \nFor more information regarding\, MARK MAKERS or the Ann Street Gallery\, contact Virginia Walsh\, Director at (845) 784-1146\, vwalsh@annstreetgallery.org or visit www.annstreetgallery.org. \nThe exhibition was curated by Virginia Walsh and will be on view through Saturday\, July 27\, 2019. \nThis exhibit is located at The Ann Street Gallery\, 104 Ann Street\, Newburgh\, NY

SUMMARY:Artist Exhibition: Principia- Origins and Destinies
DESCRIPTION:Evan D’Arpino\nPrincipia: Origins and Destinies\n\nJune 15 – July 13\, 2019\n\nOpening Saturday\, June 15\, 5-8 pm\nAtlas Studios Gallery\n11 Spring Street\, Newburgh\, NY\nAtlasNewburgh.com\n\nContact:\nevan@evandarpino.com\nEvanDArpino.com / @EvanDArpino\n\nPrincipia: Origins and Destinies\, a solo exhibition of photographs by Evan D’Arpino\, opens on Saturday\, June 15 at Atlas Studios Gallery in Newburgh\, NY. There will be an opening reception on June 15 from 5-8 pm. The show runs through Saturday\, July 13. The gallery is open daily by appointment.\n\nEvan D’Arpino’s photographs explore themes of scientific discovery and the human condition in several distinct bodies of work. The connecting thread in each series is an emphasis on composition\, texture\, and form\, as well as evocative lighting and an ambiguous sense of scale. D’Arpino’s work reveals the mystery and power associated with certain symbols\, objects\, and structures. The dichotomies of dark/light\, hard/soft\, square/round\, and living/non-living form a narrative about origins\, authority\, systems\, and processes that make up the human and natural worlds. Within this framework\, the images he creates are intentionally cryptic and allow the viewer to draw his or her own conclusions.ages.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with Julie Tremblay
DESCRIPTION:Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery is pleased to welcome artist\, Julie Tremblay for a Gallery Talk on Saturday\, May 25 at 2 p.m. Tremblay will be discussing her work in the current solo exhibit\, JULIE TREMBLAY: UNPACKED. This event is free and open to the public. \nWhether you are an old fan of Tremblay’s work or a neophyte admirer\, you will find the exhibition an inspiration. For those unaware of this world-renowned artist\, newly settled in the Hudson Valley\, this retrospective presents an unparalleled opportunity for visitors to make a personal connection with Tremblay’s art\, practice and development throughout the past two decades. \nJULIE TREMBLAY: UNPACKED is a retrospective survey that brings together the artist’s two-dimensional and three-dimensional works into one space. Organized between a set of rooms\, this exhibition takes the viewer on a journey through Tremblay’s prolific career over the past two decades (1999-2019). Nearly every type of work Tremblay has made to date\, in both technique and subject matter are represented in the exhibit. Working in an open-ended methodology and an inquiry-based approach\, each work reflects the artist’s interest in fractal geometry\, chaos theory\, mathematics and the natural sciences. \nThe works on display are both diverse and eclectic. Included in the exhibition are pieces from Tremblay’s early career\, such as the abstracted\, twinkling\, life-sized figurative sculptures fabricated from industrial waste; to a highlighted selection of large-scale charcoal drawings that reference various universal patterns found in nature; following through to her most recent iconic pieces; the visually impactful and monumental sculptures of colored aluminum mesh. \nWhile these works are not easy to define\, the ideas\, materials and procedures that motivate the artwork are dynamic. They also demonstrate the artist’s willingness to experiment with a variety of art-making techniques across a broad spectrum\, challenging traditional boundaries and resulting in powerful concepts constructed from non-traditional materials and unconventional methodologies. As explained in Tremblay’s own words in the quote below:\n“Twenty years is both long and short. In a way\, 1999 feels like yesterday. The works I made then still feel relevant today\, perhaps even more. And yet\, when I look at the amount and variety of things I made over the last twenty years\, it feels like\, all of a sudden\, these objects are giving time mass and weight and length. I think most visitors will be surprised by the variety of works shown in the exhibition\, although\, to me\, whether figurative or abstract\, they all are one. All are an exploration of different modes of representation. What is abstraction? What is figuration? What is personal? What is universal? The works in the exhibition tread the thin boundary between the universal and the personal as well as connecting ideas of the landscape that surrounds us to the landscape of our inner lives\, our secrets and the fragility of truth. Contrasting nature’s revelation of its truths to the lies that allow us to coexist. And\, in the light of very recent narratives altering events in my life\, this retrospective suddenly comes at a perfectly opportune time\, allowing me to look at both older and newer works with new eyes\, seeing new connections and new meanings. Furthermore\, this retrospective exhibition taking place in the heart of the City of Newburgh\, the city I have adopted and now proudly call home\, makes this show a particularly personal one.”\n– Julie Tremblay\nFor more information regarding\, JULIE TREMBLAY: UNPACKED or the Ann Street Gallery contact Virginia Walsh\, Director at (845) 784-1146\, vwalsh@annstreetgallery.org\, or visit www.annstreetgallery.org.\nThe exhibition was curated by Virginia Walsh and will be on view through Saturday\, June 1\, 2019.\nJulie Tremblay was born in Québec City\, Canada in 1972. She completed her BFA at Université Laval in Canada and went on to obtain her MFA at Pratt Institute\, New York. Tremblay has exhibited her work extensively in galleries\, museums and art fairs throughout the US\, Canada\, Europe\, Mexico and the Middle East. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Hendershot Gallery\, New York\, Galleri Rebecca Kormind\, Denmark\, Galleri Sortedam\, Denmark\, and Craig Scott Gallery\, Toronto. Most recently\, she has exhibited at the Nassau Museum in New York and the Sinaloa Museum of Art\, Culiacan\, Mexico. Sims is Editor-at-Large for The Scofield and a co-editor of Instance Press. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Queens College. \nReview of “Looker” by Mona Awad\, author of 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl \n“With an agile precision reminiscent of Lydia Davis\, Laura Sims captures the obsessiveness of a woman who unravels after the collapse of her marriage. A taut\, gripping portrait\, all the more sinister for its elegance.” \nJulie Chibbaro will be reading from her book “Deadly”. \nJulie Chibbaro is the award-winning author of three books: Into the “Dangerous World”\, a novel about a girl artist on the NY streets in 1984\, “Deadly”\, a medical mystery about the hunt for Typhoid Mary in 1906\, and “Redemption” a historical novel about a girl’s unintended trip to the New World in 1524. \n“Deadly” won the 2011 National Jewish Book Award\, and was Top 10 on the American Library Association’s Amelia Bloomer Project list. It was named a Bank Street Best Book\, and an Outstanding Science Trade Book by the National Science Teachers Association and is now part of many schools’ curriculum. Redemption was nominated for the Illinois HS Book Award\, and won the 2005 American Book Award. \nReview of “Deadly” by NYT Sunday Book Review \n“Paced like a medical thriller\, “Deadly” is the rare Y.A. novel in which a girl’s intellectual interests trump adolescent romance. A 16-year-old Jewish tenement dweller in 1906 New York pines away days at a finishing school on scholarship and nights helping midwife young mothers. When she quits school to assist the Department of Health and Sanitation in its pursuit of “Typhoid Mary\,” she is awakened to nascent opportunities for women in science.”
