SUMMARY:Traditional + Historic House Paints Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for HVHP Restoration Training Program’s first Winter/Spring 2020 workshop. \nThe Traditional + Historic House Paints Workshop will be held Friday\, February 21st + Saturday\, February 22nd. \nThis workshop demystifies traditional paint by exploring its benefits over synthetic coatings and offering hands-on direction for using natural\, oil-based paints for architectural restoration and preservation. Homeowners and professionals alike are welcome as we delve into this enthralling topic with skilled scholars and experts: Tina Reichenbach of Richbrook Conservation\, Natalie Yon-Eriksson of Earth+Flax\, and preservation paint specialist Erika Sanchez Goodwillie. \nParticipants will learn about the history paint making\, traditional linseed oil paints and how to use them\, surface prep\, methods of paint removal\, exterior and interior applications\, painting and brush skills\, clean-up\, and maintenance. \nTina Reichenbach is an independent architectural conservator with 20 years of experience in architectural conditions assessments\, testing\, and development of repair methods and materials for landmark structures nationwide. Her specialized interest is in historic paint research and analysis as she helps clients to understand the historic decorative appearance of painted surfaces and options for contemporary reproduction. \nSince completing her first Swedish Windowcraft restoration workshop 15 years ago\, Natalie Yon-Eriksson has built her experience in traditional materials with Scandinavian craftsmen and manufacturers. Her search for sustainable materials for the architectural industry led to the creation of Earth+Flax\, which offers traditional linseed-oil based products for the American market. Earth+Flax has increased the availability of these materials and created a community around a shared knowledge base. \nErika Sanchez Goodwillie is a freelance carpenter and technician on architectural conservation projects\, and specializes in the replication and application of handmade architectural paints for historic interiors in museums and landmark structures. She trained with Christopher Ohrstrom and Jack Fisher\, first for a period room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and has worked closely with fellow historic interior finish expert Christopher Mills. She holds a certificate in Preservation Carpentry from North Bennet Street School. \nThe cost for two full\, 7-hour days\, including all materials\, tools\, and lunch\, is $380. By offering this subsidized\, reduced-rate workshop\, Hudson Valley House Parts brings experts to share the skills and knowledge base needed to restore our historic Newburgh structures and beyond. \nTo ensure an exceptional learning experience\, the class size is limited. However\, a minimum of 6 participants is required to hold the workshop. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to email us at info@hvhouseparts.com.\nSIGN UP through this link: https://www.hvhouseparts.com/events/2019/11/1/paint-technology-paint-making-workshop

SUMMARY:Quassaick Creek: A Greenway in the Making
DESCRIPTION:“Quassaick Creek: A Greenway in the Making” at the Newburgh Free Library will open on January 31 at 5pm. The exhibition is organized by the Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance and the Hudson Valley Initiative at Columbia University GSAPP and will feature work produced by students in the Master of Architecture Program. Founded in 1990\, the Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance is a volunteer-based advocacy group that seeks to involve individuals and entities\, both public and private\, as advocates for the development and implementation of a Quassaick Creek Watershed Plan. The Hudson Valley Initiative is a community design initiative based at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). \nThe architectural proposals for a Nature Center at the soon to be breached Holden Dam were led by Professor Robert Marino in the spring of 2019. The dam will be converted into a weir for better erosion control and to restore the ecology of the creek. Students experimented with ways in which a nature center can inform the reconfigured site. The exhibition will be open to the public through the month of February during opening hours of the library and will offer space for comments and conversation about the future of the creek as a public amenity. \nThe student projects and the exhibition are part of Columbia University’s ongoing commitment to the Hudson Valley and the City of Newburgh. Since 2014\, more than 250 students from GSAPP have been working in and about Newburgh. The work ranges from urban design visions\, documentary videos\, reports and concrete architectural design proposals. \nIn 2017\, GSAPP expanded its commitment by founding the Hudson Valley Initiative\, in order to pick up\, where student ideas leave off. Through the initiative\, faculty and students continue to engage with the communities they learn from past their semester-based curriculum\, convene meetings\, facilitate projects\, host workshops or help develop design visions. \nThank you to GSAPP Professor Robert Marino and Massimiliano\, Malago\, HVI Director Kaja Kühl\, and the volunteers at Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance.

SUMMARY:ANIMALIA
DESCRIPTION:Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery is pleased to announce its newest exhibition ANIMALIA\, with an opening reception on Saturday\, November 2 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nThe animalia kingdom is defined as a diverse category\, which includes over one million species ranging from human beings to giant squid. Through the works of twenty-seven contemporary artists\, the ANIMALIA exhibition explores artists’ interpretations and representations of this natural world as expressed in their art. \nSince time immemorial\, humans have had a complex relationship and fascination with animals. As early cohabitants\, humans have relied on animals for survival; to provide food and clothing; while their beauty has provided endless creative inspiration. Throughout history and across cultures\, animal iconography realistic or imaginary in representation\, has occupied a central role in mankind’s artistic expression and thought. Today\, this affinity to the animal realm has changed but the desire to document it continues to endure. \nThe outstanding display of works in the ANAMALIA exhibit confirms this relentless human obsession and pays homage to all forms of the natural world. It also provides an alluring look into each artist’s perspective on the intricate human-animal relationship\, through a variety of depictions and motifs: symbolical icons\, mythical creatures\, sacred supernatural beings\, and portraits of favorite household pets. Expressed in a wide-ranging compilation of works\, these documentations of encounters and interactions with animality\, traverse a variety of dramatically striking styles and media: ceramics\, textiles\, drawings\, sculpture\, painting\, printmaking\, photography\, beadwork\, video and installations. \nSadly\, for most Western modern societies\, the little exposure humans presently have to the animalia kingdom is a sentimental attachment to a domesticated pet. Or perhaps\, for those seeking a slightly more authentic encounters\, a hike in a national park or a visit to the zoo. ANIMALIA affords visitors an occasion to reflect on these contemporary attitudes towards our entangled human-animal bond. More importantly\, it is an opportunity to renew our appreciation for the world of animality\, our interconnectedness and shared existence on earth. \nArtists featured: Darcie Abbatiello\, Lisa Breznak\, Jodi Cachia\, Vincent Dion\, Rachel Eng\,Jonathan Fitz\, Evelyn Gardiner\, Erin Gardner\, Karen Gibbons\, Alyssa Greening\, Jenn Houle\, Dani Ives\, Daniel M Long\, Beth Lowell\, Ryan Lytle\, Michael McConnell\, Caitlin McCormack\, Sharon Pierce McCullough\, Margaret Neher\, Guno Park\, Masako Roberts\, Kathleen Robbins\, Scott Schuldt\, Joseph Smolinski\, Casey Whittier\, Gretchen Woodman and Lydia Viscardi. \nFor more information regarding\, ANIMALIA or the Ann Street Gallery contact Virginia Walsh\, Director at (845) 784-1146\, vwalsh@annstreetgallery.org\, or visit www.annstreetgallery.org.
