What to consider before building a pool

Hi there,
We are planning to build a swimming pool in our home. But we have heard that occasionally, a mild ground current has been experienced in some Dare and Currituck Counties pools. This appears to be the result of the Earth’s own natural electrical current rather than a pool defect or household current. Locations of certain properties may be affected more than others and the currents tend to be intermittent.

And I’m not particularly worried that we’re all going to die horribly in an electrified swimming pool. But really? Can “the Earth’s own natural electrical current” really fry your pool and take out your pacemaker? Is this something specific to the Outer Banks?
What do you guys think? Please share your opinions.

Renovation Newbie Seeking Advice and Referrals

I’ve recently started the home buying journey, and while I’m very early in the exploration, my ideal scenario would be to purchase and renovate/restore a home in Newburg. I know this is a VERY open ended and broad topic, but looking to this community for any and all advice so I can learn from those who have already navigated this path in Newburgh.

I also need to start gathering a list of referrals for various services including (but not limited to):
– Real Estate Agent familiar with Newburgh
– Contractor for major renovations (plumbers, electricians also welcome)
– Architect
– Local mortgage lenders (especially with experience with renovation mortgages)
– Lawyers specializing in Real Estate

Thanks in advance!

Newburgh 1992 versus now

I went to college in Newburgh from 1988-92, and took a drive through the city this weekend.
Thinking about coming back to the Hudson Valley, and am considering renting in Newburgh.
I was happy to feel all the new energy and see so much that has changed in the city and for the good. Was wondering if people could recommend real estate agencies that deal in rentals, or particular neighborhoods that might be good if you are just settling back in. I live in Boston now, and had mobile work that took me all over the city, so I’m open to neighborhoods. Just curious about the layout of the city (I don’t remember from way back then) and what’s going on in each neighborhood. I have a car so I’d need street parking or to find a lot that rents out off street.

Thanks for your help. I’m interested in being in Newburgh for what it is. It actually reminded me of Dorchester in Boston which is eclectic and has a variety of neighborhoods.

Thanks.

This town

Is literally falling into disrepair
I’m tired of people using these homes as crack dens and then the town just slapping yellow tape up and letting them fall apart

But I’m very sorry to also say that I also hate more so these city morons coming here and hiking our taxes up to the point of eviction…
You care less about this part of NY and more about your wallets… you fix up the town with a halo and finish it up by growing horns and kicking “lower income” citizens out… I wish I could afford a Victorian home on grand street or anywhere in newburgh because I actually care for this town… but I cant because once miss mink and mr miser move in from the city my taxes move up with them…

And I’m sick of it

Fix this town up but stay in nyc because I’d like to continue living where I am and not give up my home to the cityots… 😡

Victorian restoration

Hi friends,
I am looking for someone to restore some (exterior) posts on a Victorian. I found a business about 45-60 minutes from Newburgh that does custom work on a lathe. But I need someone who can actually do the work (carpenter). Be glad to have them supervise and handle the whole job.
THANK YOU.

Newburgh Candlelight Tour

The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands will be holding its annual Candlelight Tour on the second Sunday of December, Dec. 9th. It will begin at the Crawford House which is traditionally decorated with wonderful wreaths, garlands, and other greens and flowers typical of the 19th Century, the period when Capt. David Crawford built the house—1830—and lived there with his wife and two children. We are currently looking for other homeowners to share their homes with members of the public who so enjoy this annual event. The people on our tour are so appreciative of homeowners who open up their historic or architecturally interesting homes in the Newburgh area for one day from noon to 5:00. It is very much a family affair as most of the people on the tour have been coming to us for years, often bringing their friends along with them. We feel it is one of the great events in Newburgh, showing its historic side, its charming houses and the gracious hospitality of our homeowners.
So if you own an interesting or unique or historic home and would like to share in this wonderful experience (as I have, twice) please contact me, and I will be sure to get back with you soon. Or, if you know someone whom you feel might be interested, let me know as well or have that person contact me.
Thanks, Warren Cahill, Tour Co-ordinator,,jwcahill716@gmail.com

Snow plowing?

Does anyone have a good plowing/snow shoveling service for the City of Newburgh? I’ve called 30+ places, but haven’t had any bites. Thanks!
