A Tale of Two Prisoners: The Huddy-Asgill Affair

Memorial Day is a day for all Americans to reflect on those who have fallen in service to their country. This Memorial Day weekend, on Sunday, May 28th at 2:00 PM, visit Washington’s Headquarters to hear the story of a soldier whose death sparked what could be considered the country’s first international incident. This event, known as the “Huddy-Asgill Affair,” crossed Washington’s desk in 1782 while headquartered at Newburgh and nearly derailed the cause for American independence.
This special presentation is free with standard admission which includes a guided tour of the historic Headquarters and the freedom to explore the Museum, which houses the multi award-winning exhibit, Unpacked & Rediscovered: Selections from Washington’s Headquarters’ Collection.
