Artist Reception: Suburban Landscapes

January 10, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception at the museum on Sunday,  January 10,  from 1 to 4 p.m.

Oil and charcoal art by Terry Straus Thursday, January 7 – Sunday, February 28, 2016

Describing her work as “an outside view of the suburban condition,” Terry Straus examines her surroundings in an innovative combination of traditional landscape and pop art, interpreting familiar objects such as road signs and electric wires with an eye to both abstract form and social symbolism. Combining natural elements and the tawdry artifacts of the suburban scene, she creates striking and sometimes unsettling images of contemporary life.

Ms. Straus studied drawing at the Cooper Union Scholarship Program and also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s College and a Master’s from Brooklyn College, and received an Artist-in-Residence Scholarship from the Art Students League. She worked as the Associate Art Director of Forum magazine and as the Assistant Creative Director of an advertising agency before becoming a tenured art teacher in the New York City high school system. As a member of the Allied Artists Association, Ms. Straus has exhibited her paintings, drawings, and prints widely in galleries, and her monoprints were included in a PBS special during the 1990s.
