History of Stewart Field

August 20, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$5

The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands will present noted New Windsor Town Historian Glenn Marshall who will give a lecture with power-point pictures of Stewart Field on Sunday, August 20, at 3PM at the Heritage Center, 123 Grand Street in Newburgh. Marshall has a treasure trove of photos going back to when the airport was the City Airport for the Newburgh area, and was home to bi-planes. Later, when the field was taken over by the U.S. Air Force, jets replaced the bi-planes and local Newburghers became familiar with the sound of roaring fighter-jets flying over the city and the Hudson Valley. The original owners of the property, the Newburgh Stewart family, lived in the heart of the City of Newburgh, and gave the property to the City for use as an airport. It has been named after the family ever since. Marshall’s talk will cover the history of the field, and the changes it brought about to the area. His talk last year on the history of the Newburgh shipbuilding industry was a very popular one, drawing a large crowd to the Heritage Center.
