$475
The Lime Mortar Workshop will be held Wednesday July 17 and Thursday July 18th.
Learn the essentials of repointing historic lime mortar masonry, and resurfacing and repair with Lithomex for deteriorating brick and stone. Perfect for restoring Newburgh’s historic brick buildings!
Taught by instructor Chris Hertz, Conservation Mason/Programs Manager at LimeWorks.us and Craftwork Training Center, this two-day workshop introduces the basic principles and work practices needed to repoint vintage brick and/or stone structures using breathable lime mortar, as well as basic techniques to achieve convincing and durable surface repairs for vintage masonry. Through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, we cover the following:
-
Properties of natural hydraulic lime mortars
-
Tips for selecting and mixing lime mortars
-
Clean, fill, repoint, and tool mortar joints
-
Identify properties of Lithomex and prep substrate for repair
-
Mix, apply and blend Lithomex to surface masonry
Under the guidance of experienced masons, participants learn and practice skills on mock-up panels and historic structures undergoing restoration in Newburgh. Prior masonry experience is helpful but not required.
The cost for two full, 8-hour days, including all materials, tools, and lunch, is $475. By offering this subsidized, reduced-rate workshop, Hudson Valley House Parts brings an expert to share the skills and knowledge base needed to restore our historic Newburgh structures.
