“THE EMERGENCE OF SANKOFA” showcases Gerardo Castro’s exploration of identities, addressing that gap in representation and self-expression in art, and not just the power of art but the power of how art shifts perception, and what happens in us as a result. Connecting the past with the present which allows us to be more effective agents in shaping our understanding of the forces that will have an impact on our collective future as citizens of the planet. Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “to go back and fetch it”; we must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward, and be able to understand why and how we came to be who we are today.
