Workshop Description: WRITING GHOST STORIES: a discussion and workshop
People have been telling ghost stories for thousands of years. What is it about ghost stories that appeals to our imagination and emotions? How can we create new ghost stories that don’t feel like copies of old ones, but feel new, creative, alive––and still scary? In this special two-hour workshop, we’ll look at the evolution of ghost stories and discuss what gives them their lasting power. We’ll also look at how our personal experiences can be crafted into ghostly writing, then try those techniques ourselves and share the results in a relaxed and supportive workshop setting.

Day/Date/Time: Sunday, October 31, 2021 3:30 – 5:30PM.
Author Name: Shane Bly Killoran
Author Bio: Shane Bly Killoran received her B.F.A in Acting from New York University with a heavy concentration in Women’s Studies. After acting for several years in New York and Los Angeles, she realized she enjoyed the rehearsal process far more than performing. This realization took her to the University of London where she pursued post-graduate work in theatre including her Doctoral
candidacy which focused primarily on devised performance. Upon her return from London, Shane produced television for several years. She has since left the world of TV production to focus full-time on writing and her theatrical projects.

Shane served as Co-Creator and Dramaturg for the Private Theatre’s site-specific production of Strindberg’s, Playing with Fire at, The Box in NYC. In 2013, she adapted and served as production Dramaturg for the Indian play, Sakaram Binder at MAD Playhouse Theater. In July of 2016, Nepenthe, a play centered around the brothel at Auschwitz, she conceived, co-created, dramaturged and produced, premiered at the Women and War Festival in London, United Kingdom. In 2018, Shane was an artist in residence at the Marble House Project with the Private Theatre for dramaturgy.

Nepenthe is a 2021 grant recipient from the Jewish Heritage Fund and will be premiering in New York in 2022. She is also in development for a theatrical piece (title TBD) being devised to accompany a photography exhibit throughout its 2-year European museum tour in 2022.

Workshop Description:
Through a dramaturgical lens, utilizing classical and modern play passages, the workshop will explore how dramaturgy can be used to breakdown and inform the narrative. This specific kind of analysis specifically demonstrates how the mechanisms of story operate for both play and prose writing. From there participants will then craft a piece of text, applying the discovered tools to their own work.
