18th Century Medicine: The Physician, the Silver Bullet, & the American Revolution

May 14, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$4

The practice of medicine played a pivotal role in the colonies during the Revolutionary War including in the Hudson Valley. Come to Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site on Saturday, May 14th for a special presentation, “18th Century Medicine: The Physician, the Silver Bullet, and the American Revolution,” at 1:00 PM.

The field of medicine will be examined through the lives of well-intentioned physicians and their experiences. You’ll hear how the Revolutionary War introduced another element into the lives of these typical Hudson Valley doctors. Where previously they dealt with illnesses of the body and injuries caused by accidents, they were called upon to deal with gunshot wounds and amputations. The talk examines artifacts, diary excerpts, and other sources that tell the history of Hudson Valley medicine.

This special presentation is free with museum admission, which includes a guided tour of the historic Headquarters and the freedom to explore the Museum, including the multi award-winning exhibit, Unpacked &Rediscovered: Selections from Washington’s Headquarters’ Collection. After your tour, be sure to explore the site’s historic grounds, including the Tower of Victory and take in the impressive view of the Hudson River.
