Art Exibit: African Code – A Secret Language

April 5, 2014 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Free

Artist Roslyn Fassett lives in the Town of Warwick between Mounts Adam and Eve, but has traveled to Mali and Nigeria to study and collect textiles. A selection of her artworks, based on and inspired by African tapestries and weavings, is the focus of the art exhibit, African Code: A Secret Language ~ paintings by Roslyn Fassett, in the Mindy Ross Gallery April 1 through June 25, 2014.

Drawn by a particular interest in the symbols and patterns found on the fabrics, Fassett has used that fascination as a springboard from which to transform the concept into large oil paintings. Also included in this exhibit are glowing oil pastel landscapes based on the theme of reflection and a series of vibrant, dark figure drawing.

Commenting on the works, Martin De Bruhl states, “The mystery of the dark and hidden in contrast to the illumination of the light, play off each other in the paintings of Roslyn Fassett. Underlying this work is the search for insight and relationship between these two qualities, what is unknown and what is revealed.”

A reception for the artist and her exhibit is slated for Saturday, April 5 from 5 to 7pm during which music will be provided by Joy Kissane, pianist. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The reception event will take place in the Mindy Ross Gallery and Foyer, Kaplan Hall which is located at the corner of Grand and First Streets, Newburgh. The entrance to the building and free parking garage is on First Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm in April and May, and Monday through Thursday 9am to 4pm in June.
