Practice and Process: New Exhibition and Reception at Ann St Gallery

November 16, 2013 @ 11:30 pm - 1:30 am

Safe Harbors of the Hudson Ann Street Gallery Presents the Exhibition Practice and Process

On View November 16, 2013, through January 11, 2014

Artist’s Reception
Saturday, November 16, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Practice and Process highlights the work of five contemporary artists who address practice concerns in an attempt to provide insight into their method of creative thought. It explores their inspirational pathways and reveals how the process of creating art can often mask the extensive effort involved in the conception, design and construction of their work.

A notable work in the exhibition that demonstrates the artist’s struggle to reach beyond the medium for inspiration by engaging in the process of reflective researching and active art making is
Mesmer Eyes by Guggenheim Fellow Kathy Goodell. A panoramic room installation that ensconces the viewer in a colorful and copious display of oval-shaped ink drawings, the work is viewed through oscillating optical lenses.

“Developing knowledge about the complicated processes of making art can lead to a more informed viewer and a better understanding of an artist’s work. In turn, it can also precipitate a greater appreciation of art and its significance in contemporary society” says the curator of the exhibition and Ann Street Gallery Director, Virginia Walsh.

Practice and Process features the work of Jill Baroff, Martha Bone, Kathy Goodell, Stefana McClure and Todd Pavlisko.
