Historic Window Grills

I’m interested in installing historic Iron window grills/grates on the basement level floor of the home we are renovating and cannot find any indication in the Design Guidelines of the Historic District whether these would be allowed. Obviously, because they would be period pieces, they would not be constructed with safety exit, but if there are two back entrances and windows that would have modern grating with safety exits, would installing the period grates conflict or comply with building and historic codes? Just wondering if anyone has tried this or encountered a problem with front building restoration.

Thanks.
Erika

scrape, paint, or siding?

Hello- We have a 1913 cedar shingle house that is in bad need of scraping and repainting. We are also thinking about cement board (hardieboard) siding because it won’t need repainting for decades (?) forever (?) and it looks good (?). Does anyone have experience with either a great paint job that has lasted at least 10 years or with cement board siding in Newburgh? Thanks!

Sewer line inspections

Hello,

We are considering having a sewer line inspection done (with a camera) on a house we are hoping to buy. Has anyone had this done in Newburgh? Has anyone regretted not having it done? The house is old and there is a tree between the house and the road so we are afraid of clay pipes and/or root problems leaving us with an expensive sewer lateral replacement. But we haven’t found many people offering this service locally.

Thank you,
-Eli

Steam Heat!

I have a one pipe steam heating system which I’m educating myself about. A lot of these old systems have been converted to hot water but is yours isn’t then then it looks like there are quite a few options to make your system run better. Chime in and you can be a steam heat nerd too. And maybe save some serious cash!

FHA 203K Consultant and Contractor Recommendations?

Hello everyone,
My name is Gabriel and I am a long time reader of this site, and even longer time fan on Newburgh. My wife and I have finally decided to make the move (from Brooklyn of course), and have recently heard back from a shortsale house we put an offer on! We are very excited to join the Newburgh community and be a part of all that is going on.

We are seeking to use a FHA 203k loan to buy and rehab the house, and we are now at the point where we need an FHA consultant to inspect the house and write a report about it’s rehabilitation needs. Has anyone been through this process before? Can anyone recommend a FHA consultant that they have used and liked? Please share any information you may have.

Also, we will also be searching for a FHA 203k general contractor to do the work? Does anyone have any recommendations? Even if you have a general contractor that you loved, but are not sure if they do FHA 203k projects, please share the information.

Thanks so much and I hope to see you soon!

Restoring a house

Hi,
My husband and I are photographers living in Brooklyn and recently started to think about moving to the area. We love the idea of buying a house with good bones that needs to be restored so we can make it look exactly how we want. A couple of questions – what areas would you recommend looking in? Are there any sites or posts about people who have renovated houses? Would love to get an idea of how long things took and how much was spent just to get some rough figures.

Thanks!

Bathtub finish repair.

We just moved into a house that has really nice claw foot tubs, but one of them has the finish flaking off, almost like paint. Does anyone know how to fix this or a contractor that can?

Glass and contractors

Hi,

We unfortunately have a couple of windows with bent glass that are broken and need to be replaced, as well as a few other regular windows that need glass replacement. Does anyone know of a good glass place that does bent glass? We are also looking for a plasterer and a painter who also puts up wallpaper.

Thanks!
Julie

Contractors in Newburgh?

It would be nice to start creating a list of contractors for any of you that have had positive experiences so newcomers can know who to turn to when restoring their homes. Feel free to add your suggestions!
