Looking to move to Newburgh – advice?

Have a few questions on a potential move:
Best realtors to contact.
Ideal location for someone without a car and needs to be able to walk to commuter bus to NYC or to ferry to Beacon.
General commute time to midtown, taking into consideration winter months, bad weather conditions.
Renovation costs for hopefully a house that needs cosmetic work and plumbing connections and average electrical work.
Supermarkets/food stores within walking distance of ferry or bus.
Cost of renting one bedroom to “test the waters”.
Thanks all,

Completely rebuilt apartment available

If anyone is looking for an apartment or knows of anyone who is, a 100 year old brick structure has been gutted down to the bare bricks and completely rebuilt to incorporate classic style with modern conveniences. Located on Ann Street near Johnson Street (one block over from Broadway) duplex apartment includes full wood cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, including a dishwasher and microwave with vent, in the kitchen; hardwood floors, working gas fireplace, recessed lighting, ceiling fans, walk-in closet. Call Dina 914-467-0769 for more information. Not looking for an apartment but have any suggestions, let me know.

Restaurant Need in Newburgh

Hello all!

I’m a local to Albany and am looking to open a restaurant within the next year or so and think that Newburgh would be the perfect place to settle down and open up shop. I’ve read a lot of comments from readers in these forums about wanting more businesses to open in the area, but I wanted to ask if the need for a restaurant is there? It’s a modern Italian concept (but close to causal dining, not fine dining with white tablecloths). The concept is local ingredients from farms and gardens, everything fresh and made in-house (nothing frozen or pre-packaged, everything prepared that day).

There seems to be a mix of casual and high-end dining already in place, so I was curious as to the needs/wants of the locals in terms of dining options.

Thanks for any help or insight!

Incentives to Move/Invest in the city of Newburgh

I took the New Haven line to Mamorneck last week and noticed an advertisement on the train that offered attractive incentives for anyone who would consider moving to New Haven CT (http://renewhavenct.com/) Incentives are really amazing and include tax benefits in addition to free college education if your child graduates the New Haven public schools. Does Newburgh have a group of advocates who are promoting incentives to move and invest here? If yes, who are they and how can I get involved?

It would be a dream of mine to restore one of the old homes in the city and live there; however, the investment required is astronomical with the taxes. It doesn’t seem as if city politics are in favor of revitalization or gentrification. Does anyone have any insight into this? Too many historic gems are on the market, what is preventing the city from offering incentives to people who genuinely want invest and be a part of Newburgh?

loft/warehouse space to buy/renovate??

my husband and daughter and i currently reside in brooklyn. as an artist and social worker with a child, brooklyn is beginning to eat us alive and we’ve started to think about getting out of town. newburgh feels like a real possibility to us. we’re interested particularly in buying a big open warehouse/lofty type space but we don’t see much of that on the usual real estate websites. so a couple of questions: does this sort of thing exist in newburgh? and, if so, how do we go about finding out about what’s available?

thanks!

City Owned Property

Hi,

I have found this website to be a terrific resource and look forward to “Picture of the Week”, Real Estate section, etc. I am currently engaged via email with the City of Newburgh with purchasing a city owned property. I am currently waiting for inspection times on two available properties. Does anyone have any practical advice/tips with engaging with the city? Thanks in advance.

Is Newburgh Bouncing Back?

Hello,

I’m a graduate student at Columbia University and I’m interested in some of the public health issues in Newburgh such as lead contamination in housing. I see this problem as a consequence of various economic and social factors and so I’m trying to understand this issue from a broader context. I’ve heard about a lot of really amazing things happening in Newburgh such as the community garden and the Newburgh urban market, and I’m really interested in getting a a sense of how people feel Newburgh is doing. Obviously there are many problems such as high poverty and high crime, but is there a general sense that Newburgh is starting to come back? I’ve only visited Newburgh a few times, but it seems to me like many positive changes are happening, which is awesome because the city has so much to offer.

Summer Internships and Jobs

Hello, my name is Yoo-Nah. I’m a junior at Barnard College, Columbia University in NYC, and I was just wondering if there were any suggestions and/or opportunities for summer internships or jobs in Newburgh. I am actually a native of Newburgh, NY – I was born at St. Luke’s Hospital, grew up in Milton, and my dad owns a small business right on Broadway. Although I am not a stranger to Newburgh and the problems the city has been facing for years, I have always felt a little bit of an outsider having attended schools outside of the area. This hasn’t kept me from feeling a pull to go back to Newburgh and start something though, and following the different happenings recently through Newburgh Restoration has inspired me tremendously. Although I’m a liberal arts major with very little technical skills, I am open to all different opportunities and enjoy learning about almost anything. I look forward to hearing from anyone with helpful thoughts/opinions/suggestions! Thank you.

Community Planning and Heritage

I am a city planning graduate student and I am writing my thesis on Newburgh and the intersection of heritage and planning. I am interested to know what community members think could be done in the city of Newburgh to better serve the community and connect with Newburgh’s heritage, especially in the next stage of waterfront development. I would love to know your thoughts…

Partially Examined Life discussion with Frithjof Bergmann; New Work, New Culture

This podcast is extremely relevant to the future of economics, if for nothing else it helps us analyze our current economic environment. This is extremely relevant to Newburgh, in my opinion. Fighting out of poverty via a mix of jobs and new age/modern community self-sustainability.

Talking with Frithjof Bergmann, Prof. Emeritus from U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor about his book New Work, New Culture (2004, English release coming soon).

Frithjof is a world-renowned ex-Hegel/Nietzsche scholar who has worked since the early 80s on projects to realize the goal of “New Work,” which is an alternative to the current, dysfunctional job system. New Work enables people to do work (which is not the same as a “job”) that they really, really want. Human nature is not such that we are born free and need restraining by a social contract; rather, we need institutions to help us develop a self, to figure out what we really want and become free by doing things that we deeply identify with. New Work Enterprises promotes technology like fabricators and cutting-edge farming to support community self-sufficiency in places like Detroit that the job system has left behind.
