New Newburgh baseball team starting in 2015

First I want to say that I read your blog regularly and enjoy your work. It’s nice to see somebody who cares about the welfare of Newburgh, and take the time to inform people about new and upcoming businesses / housing opportunities in the area. I live about 10 miles from the city and regularly volunteer for habitat, and patronize Newburgh businesses, so any time investment in the city is a plus in my book!

The reason that I’m posting is to bring to your attention that Newburgh is supposed to be getting a professional baseball team for 2015, playing in Delano Hitch stadium. The team is called the Newburgh Newts (not sure who picked that… but there are worse names out there, I suppose 😉 ). Newburgh hasn’t had a prefessional team since the ’97 Nighthawks, so this seems like a pretty exciting development. Here are some links I found with more information:

http://blogs.hudsonvalley.com/fullcount/2014/09/04/say-hello-to-the-newburgh-newts/

Judging by the dates on some of these sources, this has been in the works for awhile, but I only heard about it a few days ago through an acquaintance. A little sad that it’s getting almost no press. It may be good material for a piece.

Thanks,

Nick

Detailed map of Newburgh's original waterfront

Hi,

Just posting here to share a map of Newburgh’s waterfront area made ~1900 that I found on the Library of Congress website. The map can be downloaded in a VERY high resolution (a 150mb TIFF file) but unfortunately, the key marking what each of the numbered buildings were at the time appears to be missing.

Still, it’s a really awesome illustration that shows just how much of the waterfront was razed in the 1960s, and which neighborhoods have remained unscathed. Here’s the link:

Safety

Hi! I’m looking to buy a home in Newburgh and I’m moving from the southwest US. I read a lot of statistics that say that the crime rate in Newburgh is high, but on the other hand, I hear it’s such a nice place to live.

Any advice or recommendations?

Thank you!

Looking for a Rental

Hi All,

I’m looking for a rental for myself and my 2.5 year old son, which is in a good pedestrian neighborhood with easy access to ferry, parks, restaurants. Im open to historical homes or open space lofts.

Are there good daycare/schools for 2-3 year olds in the area or do parents take their children to Beacon?

Also, does anyone know the cost of train pass to NYC?

Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks so much.

Like the last person….. looking for a big dog friendly rental!

Hi Newburgh!
I will be moving to the Hudson River Valley in mid/late August for a job, and am really interested in living in Newburgh for a year to “test it out” for a possible permanent home buying location. Ideally I am looking for a nicer 1 bedroom/large studio, a loft type would be nice but not necessary, but preferably in one of the neighborhoods with good potential for buying and renovating a row house in the next couple years. I would love to have rent around $700-750, but would consider higher for the right place. The tricky part: I have a German Shepard. She’s not huge, about 55 lbs, and loves people, but she does have a watch dog bark and a classic guard dog look. We (the dog and myself) live in a slightly sketchy part of Santa Rosa, and I’ve been grateful for that bark before when there have been near break-ins, so I regard her as a minor security measure. She is, for better or worse, actually harmless. Just a nice scary profile 🙂
Things I’m especially excited about Newburgh are getting involved with the community gardening projects and the arts scene-is there a good yarn store in town yet? Coming from an area of California where the neat neighborhoods are so unbelievably priced out of range (including large parts of Oakland now…), it’s really exciting to read about the stuff going on in this city and see the kind of real estate still available. Looks like a fantastic future ahead of it!
Any advice on good places to look for rentals, or if anyone has one coming available in that timeframe would be hugely appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Looking for a pet-friendly rental in Newburgh

Hey there.

Been reading NR for a few years now and have visited many times. I love the place and am looking to finally make the move from Brooklyn (of course).

I’m looking for a pet-friendly, preferably 2+ bedroom rental somewhere in walking distance of the ferry. My dogs are city dogs. They’ve lived with me in NYC apartments for 8 years and they LOVE people. They’re good dogs.

It would just be myself and them. I’d use the extra bedroom(s) as an office. I publish a site and direct an org dedicated to ethics reform and good governance issues in NYS. I’m pretty google-able, if you’re a landlord and you wanna know who I am and what I do.

If anyone has any leads on a place that meets those requirements, I’ll gladly take you out to lunch anywhere you like. Or cook for ya. Or whatever.

Any leads are *greatly* appreciated.

Vacant home insurance

Hi,

We are buying a house in Newburgh and now shopping for insurance for the house, which is vacant. Does anyone here have an agent or insurance company to recommend?

Thank you,

Thinking of moving to Newburgh

Hello, quick question…. does anyone have a rough idea about the monthly services cost? electric, gas, water and the like….. I know it changes according to one’s household, but we just want to have a ballpark notion of it.

Thanks!

Lookiong for a Local Carpenter

Hi. I’m looking to install some crown molding and repair/replace two window sills and surrounding trim in my kitchen. Was hoping people here might give me some contacts for this work. I heard there’s someone working (or living) in Micheal Green’s house, but have yet to get his contact info. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Moving back to newburgh!

Hi fellow Newburghers! My husband and I grew up in Newburgh/New Windsor and moved to Brooklyn 9 years ago. We are looking to come back with our 1 year old and are seriously considering moving to the heights.

Our families are both in the TOwn of Newburgh and New Windsor and think that we are absolutely insane. Can you give us some info that we can share with them to help them feel a little less freaked out about it?

Thanks!

Visiting Newburgh with Thoughts of Staying

My fiance and I are planning to visit Newburgh this coming Saturday, November 8th, to see what is happening in the community and see some properties to invest or maybe live. We currently live in Brooklyn. Graphic designer and IT Tech by vocation, and artist and musician by avocation.

What/where would you recommend going to see the best of what is happening in the Newburgh community, and where are the best areas to buy?
