On a typical Saturday in Newburgh on the corner of Liberty and Washington you might see a group of people playing chess. This is part of the Newburgh Chess Club started by Anthony Muhammad, a City of Newburgh Firefighter. He says that he is passionate about the game of chess and even creates and designs his own chessboards. He is focusing on the youth of the city and would like for his shop to be a place where everyone can come and play. If you would like to play for the day the fee is $5 and $20 for the entire month. You can check out his Facebook page for more details.

It was opening weekend at Martha in Newburgh this past Saturday. Not only is the space beautiful, a few customers left hopeful reviews:
“Thank you for the lovely salad, pound cake, and conversation this afternoon! You can expect to see a lot of us.” A.D.
“Martha is a rising star restaurant on Liberty street. I stopped in this morning for a gift certificate. I had a Cappucino with a shot of espresso. It was served beautifully by a competent barista. Hot and satisying. Highly recommend Martha..Way better than Dunkin bc Martha will be serving healthy foods, raw salads, with some gluten free foods. When in Newburgh eat there. It is your kind of place for healthy food. ” S.K.
This is definitely a very hopeful venture for the City of Newburgh and a great addition to Liberty Street. You can visit their website or fanpage for future updates. They will also be closed next Monday as they gear up for full service.

The interior is fabulous, certainly setting the bar for future businesses on Liberty Street.
