2 Alices Coffee Lounge Newburgh

Some big news for lower Broadway! After a long search for the right business 2 Alices Coffee Lounge is coming to Newburgh in the last available ground floor space of Safe Harbors of the Hudson, 117 Broadway. Partners, Mikey Jackson and Aurelia Winborn just signed their lease last Thursday, and by the look on their faces, they seem excited! 2 Alices is well known for their Cornwall location that specializes in high quality coffee and espresso drinks as well as light food such as pastries, bagels, soup and mac and cheese. They are also known for their live music, karaoke, and game nights. So what can we expect from the Newburgh location? And even more important, when will they open?

Mikey says that over the years they have learned what it takes to run a coffee shop. One of the most important factors is that it should be a part of the community. Their Cornwall location attracts all age groups and they hope their Newburgh location will do the same. They will be offering free WiFi and areas for parents to bring their toddlers as well as study space for college students. The occupancy for the space is for approximately 45 people with flexibility to adjust seating to accommodate large groups who would like to use their space. There is no set opening date but they are aiming towards the end of 2014. Business hours will be 7am to 7pm and will be extended once they receive their liquor license. Once they obtain that license they can then look into offering trivia and karaoke nights in Newburgh. 2 Alices will also be hiring 8-10 people for their Newburgh location. They are not interviewing as of yet however, Mikey has learned with his Cornwall location that it is optimal when his employees live walking distance to the coffee shop.

Mikey grew up in Rockland County and Aurelia in Texas. Before moving to the Hudson Valley they both lived in NYC. They spent many years looking for a second location for their coffee shop that had all of the right elements. Newburgh kept coming up over the years. It’s close to where they live and something felt right for them at the right time to open up the coffee shop in Newburgh. It is very exciting to see a new business coming to the city that has community involvement in their business model.

This new lounge will give locals more choices and be a nice addition to lower Broadway. Already we have seen improvements in the Ritz Theater with the new marquee, the new collaborative workspace called Space Create and the popular Teran Studio just next door. There are also some preliminary projects being planned for properties directly across the street on Broadway. Stay tuned.

This past Saturday marked the official start of Columbia University’s design studio in the City of Newburgh. Not only did they meet with city officials and seal the deal but they also took the opportunity to take a small walking tour of Newburgh. I was pleasantly surprised when I ran into them on Liberty Street. The group above (minus myself) makes up only a fraction of the actual class, but already they have good impressions of the city. One student said she already found a couple of homes she could see herself living in!

Everyone is highly anticipating the work they will complete for the fall semester. Their design studio will analyze environmental, social, economic, and infrastructure issues  of how Newburgh fits or operates within the Hudson Valley and NYC metro regions. Once completed, they will present their findings and recommendations to the city as well as a presentation at the university.

After much deliberation, the graduate urban design program at Columbia University has chosen the City of Newburgh for their fall 2014 semester urban design studio! There will be approximately 45 students from 20+ countries and 6-8 faculty all focusing their attention on the city. Professor Justin Garrett Moore and his fellow faculty felt that Newburgh and its larger Hudson River Valley context would be a rich place for their students to investigate and hopefully contribute to generating new ideas for the city’s potential. Although Newburgh has its challenges, they felt the energy, engagement and momentum that seem to be building here has made them feel that it will be a good choice. It will be the smallest city ever studied for an urban design studio by the program at Columbia.

All of the 45 students in the program have architecture or landscape architecture professional degrees and are doing graduate/advanced study to learn urban design and its more interdisciplinary focus. Some studios focus on single issues such as architecture, historic preservation, or transportation. However, this studio will be focusing on issues of a more larger scale including: housing and social dynamics, economic development, infrastructure, environmental quality, open space and mobility networks, etc. The fall semester of the program is also focused on the regional relationships of cities. So while students would work with a focus in Newburgh, their projects and responsibilities will expand to larger scales – environmental, social, economic, infrastructure, etc., of how Newburgh fits or operates within the Hudson Valley and NYC metro regions.

The results from the design studio will be presented at a final project review at Columbia University, and possibly in Newburgh. While there will not be any enforcement of the recommendations the students make, the city and its stakeholders will have the option to take into consideration any advice offered and carry it out.

Justin’s interest in the City of Newburgh came about from the recent New York Times article, as did the new City Manager. We can only hope that this new design studio will cause more people to discover Newburgh and bring new energy and creativity to the city. A party will be held on Saturday May 3, 2014 from 7-9pm at the Fullerton Cultural Center, 297 Grand Street, Newburgh, NY 12550 to introduce both Johanna Porr and Matthew Colon.  Potluck and BYOB. Open to all to attend.

Johanna Porr, City of Newburgh native, was recently appointed Orange County Historian.

“Every community in Orange County has incredible stories, some related to transportation and technology, others to national military history, architecture and design or pivotal moments in social history.  The role of helping to bring the work of our region’s dedicated municipal historians to the public is one that I’m greatly looking forward to,” Porr said.

In her previous position as director of the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands, Porr focused on raising funds for the organization’s annual budget, worked with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to continue a comprehensive renovation on the group’s headquarters at Crawford House, and planned monthly programs on historical topics. She was recently recognized for her efforts with the Society by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and appeared in the New York Times and on C-Span.

“I will forever be grateful for my time with the Society, a tightknit group of supporters and volunteers who dauntlessly take the reins of so many incredible community initiatives,” Porr said.

Matthew Colon of Newburgh, N.Y., has been named the Society’s new director.

“I’m pleased to see Matthew at the helm of the Historical Society,” said Porr. “I had the pleasure of working with him at Washington’s Headquarters, and I know that his dedication and creativity will be a great benefit to his new role.”

Porr has been immersed in community and civic service from an early age.

Porr has aided the community as a member of the fundraising team for Tower of Victory Restoration and as a regional contributor to the Washington- Rochambeau Trail committee for the National Parks Service.  She is a young professional of Orange County Chamber of Commerce, serves on the Action Newburgh Crime & Safety Committee and is the Vice- President of trustees for the Fullerton Mansion Cultural Center. Porr is also founder of both the Newburgh-Beacon Wheelmen bicycle club and the Newburgh Horse Thief Detective Society history club.
She was a historian at Washington’s Headquarters, the nation’s first historic site, for six years.

Porr earned her master’s degree in public and non-profit administration from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., her bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from the State University of New York in New Paltz, N.Y., and her bachelor of European history from Franklin College in Switzerland. She received a certificate in museum studies from Smith College, and a certificate in American archaeology from the University of Virginia.
