Snow and ice has been a common element of Newburgh life throughout the decades. This picture of Water Street in the 1960’s certainly depicts that. This area was already in decline by this time, and withing a few years would be totally decimated by urban renewal.

If you have old photos of Newburgh that you would like to share email me.

Check out Broadway in 1983! You can see many features that still exist today like Hotel Newburgh and Karpeles Museum. You can also see the buildings that were torn down in the Mid-Broadway lot where developers would like to put a supermarket. Lower Broadway is already seeing revitalization with Safe Harbors of the Hudson spearheading the way. As they say, to know where you are going, you must know where you are coming from.

Stephen Webb sent over these lovely old photos of his mother, Marion Sutton age three, on the roof of 488 Broadway in 1936. Isn’t she adorable?

Regarding this photo Stephen said, “My grandparents (Harold & Nellie Sutton) lived in Newburgh for 52 years. My mother (Marion) was born and raised there and my parents were married in Grace Methodist Church (1954). I always loved Newburgh. I’m hoping it can be restored to its former beauty.”

Thank you Stephen. If you have old family photos in Newburgh that you would like to share email me.

Recently, I was touring 87 Liberty that is on the market. If you are interested in purchasing it, it is still for sale. The owner, Peter, shared with us all of these great photos from 1983. These were the few I was able to snap with my cell phone. Go view the property for yourself and Peter can share many other details of the area and his home. He is full of knowledge! We’d love to see this property fall in the right hands. It needs work, but has lot of character and you can’t buy a better location in Newburgh.

Diane Cifarelli sent in some lovely old family photos in the City of Newburgh. Sometimes it is hard to imagine what Newburgh must have looked like in its heyday. Looking at these photos makes it much easier to imagine, and gives everyone something to strive for; to bring back that old school charm that makes Newburgh special. Thanks Diane!

This is Giammarco Bros. Normal Meat Market. It was on the corner of Mill and Washington Street. Year 1931. I think this is where it was located.

Press release:

It is Autumn in the Hudson Valley. Trees are shedding their leaves, the air is crisp and clear, and pumpkins are dotting the landscape.  Though the last day for our Autumn Schedule is Sunday, October 27th, Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site is gearing up for an eventful Winter Schedule. Starting Friday, November 8th, the site will be open every Friday and Saturday, 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. We will be available to visitors by appointment Tuesday through Thursday and also open for Special Events. Now, as for those Winter Special Events – we have some great ones this season! They are:

Warm Up At The Washingtons’ taking place on Sunday, December 8th , from 12:00PM-4:00PM. Start the season with a visit to our historic headquarters. Take a break from gift shopping and writing cards to see how the Washingtons acknowledged this season during the last winter of the Revolutionary War. Walk through seasonally decorated rooms while you are serenaded by the Salmagundi Consort. In each room a historic interpreter will answer your questions and supply an overview about what you are seeing and how life was at that time. Finish your visit to General and Mrs. Washington’s rented domicile with some cookies and cider by an outdoor fire. The admission is free for the day, compliments of the Friends of the State
Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands.

While in the neighborhood visiting us, stop in and see the homes featured on the Candlelight Tours. Contact the Crawford House at 845-561-2585 for more information and ticket prices.

Winter Welcome Week  will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 26th, 27th and 28th , from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM each day.  18th Century attired historic Interpreters will guide you through the headquarters where General and Mrs. Washington resided during the last 16 ½ months of the Revolutionary War. In these rooms, decorated for the holiday season, Washington announced the cease fire, rejected a monarchy, and created and awarded the Badge of Military Merit, precursor of the Purple Heart.

Along with the headquarters, admission to the Museum, featuring “Unpacked and Rediscovered,” our award-winning  exhibit of over 1,300 artifacts, is included and a take-home activity will be offered to all those young at heart.

Presidents Day Weekend – Mark your 2014 calendar and bring an appetite to our annual George Washington Birthday Celebration. It’s a three-day event on February 15th, 16th, and 17th, from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM. Admission to the Headquarters and Museum is free those three days and includes military demonstrations, presentations, music, and a take-home souvenir.

The General’s Lady, our tribute to Martha Washington, will take place in March. At that event, the 2014 Woman of History Award will be given to a woman who has contributed to the betterment of Hudson River Valley history.

These are just sneak previews of the events planned during our Winter Schedule. Keep looking for upcoming announcements and visit us on our website and Facebook, or call 845-562-1195 for more information.
