Since last September, the East Parmenter housing project being constructed by Habitat for Humanity has been moving full steam ahead. Not long ago the site was an empty barren lot. Today, there stands 4 homes which were dedicated to four families on May 21st. This is part of a master plan for development of 24 homes on East Parmenter Street. Click here for more photos of the dedication on Habitat’s Facebook page. Some of these homes are also available for purchase. City historian, Mary McTameney even provided Habitat with a old photo of East Parmenter back in the 70’s. Check out the photo below for a trip back in time.
Progress at the East Parmenter Street project has been moving full steam ahead. Last time we showed you pictures, the framing of the homes was starting to take shape. Now the siding is up and the interior is being worked on. Staircases, kitchens, wood floors, and more have already been put into place. Click here for Habitats full album of pictures on the East Parmenter Homes.
Even if the rest of us don’t want to step a foot out of the house into this crazy winter weather, Habitat for Humanity is still working hard at completing the second phase of the East Parmenter neighborhood. Even though it’s not complete yet, it is really coming together and looks lovely in the snow.
Work is continuing full force over at the second phase of the Easter Parmenter Street project. They have already begun putting up a roof. Something tells me it won’t be long until these homes are completed. Check out Habitat’s Facebook page for more photos.
Now that Phase 1 of the East Parmenter neighborhood is completed, Habitat for Humanity has broke ground on phase 2! This is an exciting project that will transform an entire street very close to Washington’s Headquarters and Liberty Street. See below to what the job site looked like before the foundation was laid.
If Habitat is able to move as swiftly with phase 2 as they did with phase 1, we will see these homes completed within a years time. Families have already moved in to the new homes built from phase 1 across the street. And, neighbors are seeing an improvement in the quality of life on the block. Volunteers even had a hand in rebuilding a porch of a neighboring house. The bug is catching on. Hopefully other home owners on E. Parmenter will look into the façade grant and loan being offered and continue with the progress.
First, a huge thank you is due to Jonathan Valle for the awesome pictures he provided me of the new East Parmenter Houses! Click to enlarge for awesome detail. Oh, and one more thing. If you love these pictures as much as I do and you want to share them, make sure you credit Jonathan for his work.
Back to the story. Remember back in September when Newburgh Restoration told you about the Neighborhood Foundation Celebration of the East Parmenter neighborhood? Well things are taking off! Remember what this exact same corner used to look like?
Leyland Alliance and Habitat for Humanity have pulled these homes together in very little time. And it’s just the start. Eventually there will be more homes built on this street according to their neighborhood master plan. The plan includes two pocket parks, historically-designed street lamps, underground utilities and city water and sewer. Only sixteen residences will be available for purchase. They are targeting the neighborhood to “teachers and fire or police professionals.” As well as the “creative class of artists, writers, entrepreneurs and boomers.” Click here for photos during the construction.
This was a scary street to be on before. But, with the hope of new families moving in, things could drastically change on this small block. It’s also right down the street from Washington’s Headquarters, Habitat’s ReStore, and all the shops on Liberty Street. It’s also very close to the Ritz Theater. We will be following this closely to see how this project develops.
