Have you ever wanted to go back in time and speak to an 18th Century lady? Well, you can at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site.  On Saturday, May 14th meet Cornelia Clinton, New York’s first First Lady, or on Sunday, May 15th visit Tryntje Hasbrouck, General Washington’s Newburgh landlady. Tours at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Call for reservations.

The house afforded little in creature comforts for the General, Mrs. Washington and his staff. What mattered more was location! location!! location!!! The Hasbrouck farmhouse was ideally situated, offering access to, and a clear view of, the Hudson River and the Highlands.

On Saturday, Mrs. Clinton will be eagerly awaiting the arrival of her very dear friend, Martha. She’s very interested in checking on the suitability of the house as a headquarters for the General and a temporary home for Martha.

Visitors joining her as she appraises the new headquarters will hear about Cornelia’s Dutch background, her husband, Governor George Clinton, their home life, growing family and her own Revolutionary War experiences.  She will also answer any questions guests might have as they accompany her.

On Sunday, you’ll find out what a French/Dutch Newburgh widow had in common with the Virginia-born Washingtons. Very simply – they both occupied the same stone farmhouse. Mrs. Hasbrouck is checking everything, making sure all is in order for her new renters. While she inspects the rooms, she’ll share information about all her tenants – past and present.

Guests will also be given an insight into her local background, her family and their wartime activities. She’ll also confide how her patriotic fervor was tested when she was asked to rent her home to the Washingtons.

Special Event admission price for these First Person Experiential Tours is $4.00 per person, children 6 and under are free. Reservations are required and should be made by Friday, May 13th. Call 845-562-1195 for details and directions.

Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site is a registered national historic landmark.  It is located at the corner of Liberty and Washington Streets within the city of Newburgh’s East End Historic District.  The site is one of 35 historic sites within the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and is one of 24 facilities administered by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in New York and New Jersey.  For further information contact: (845) 562-1195.  For more information about New York State Parks, please visit our website at www.nysparks.com.

An event 2 years in the making will be coming to Newburgh this summer. It is the Orange County Triathlon. It will be an Olympic distance triathlon that will be held at the Newburgh Waterfront. The OCT is guaranteeing to give a positive impression of the city and to have successful management. This will be the first ever triathlon to occur in the City of Newburgh. According to race director, Neal Wilkinson, “The sport of the triathlon is the fastest growing multi-sport in the country right now with no decline in sight. Triathletes are a perfect example of people who are aware of the environment around them and good examples of positive proactive citizens for a healthy active community.”

Most of the athletes along with friends and family will be from out of town and first timers visiting the Newburgh area. Surely local businesses will benefit from the influx of new visitors to the city. The map below highlights the routes the athletes will use when running. Washington’s Headquarters will be the location where runners will start and finish. You can check out their website for the maps for the swimming, biking, and transition routes.

According to Neal most participants will need approximately 16 weeks of training depending on the initial conditioning of the athletes. But, you can register online up till the day before the race. If you can’t participate physically in the triathlon, you can still be a part of it. Volunteers are needed for cheering and more (Course Directors, Lifeguards, Kayakers, Aid Station Workers, Bike Handlers, Sunscreen Applicators, Body Markers, Food Tent Workers, Finish Line, Crowd Control, Security etc.). If you are interested to know how you can be a part of this event email Neal at neal(at)orangecountytri.com or click here.

I loooove tips about positive things going on in the community. Thanks Felicia Hodges about giving me this tip on Karate and self defense classes offered at the Salvation Army in the City of Newburgh (map). Classes are offered for children (7 & up) through adult. One of the best parts is that this program is friendly on the pockets- only $25 for the calendar year. It’s all about giving back…

The style of Karate pictured is USA Goju. The class meets every Friday from 7:15pm-9pm and Saturday from 11am-1pm. It’s a way to keep the kiddies busy! If you have a tip about something going on the in city, feel free to email me newburghrestoration{at}gmail{dot}com!
