Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands will hold their annual meeting on Thursday, October 13th at Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh. Beginning at 5:30 PM with a reception, the meeting will start at 6:00 PM, followed by a special presentation for Archives Month. Admission is free.
While attending this gathering, all are invited to join the Friends, whose mission is to increase public awareness of Washington’s Headquarters, Knox’s Headquarters and the New Windsor Cantonment’s historical and educational significance, to raise funds to supplement educational, programming and collection needs of the sites, and to offer quality educational and history-related items for sale to site visitors. In their role as volunteers, all three sites have relied upon them for assistance during special events.
The OurHudson Barge is an industrial relic, the Pennsylvania Railroad Barge No. 399, re-born this year as a floating town hall, exhibition space and movie theater. The barge tour will showcase many ideas for improving the region, and lead a public conversation on the steps needed to help the Hudson Valley reach its full potential.

From farmlands to the heart of river cities, the film explores the diverse ideas that are shaping the future of the Hudson River Valley. The sneak preview of this film will be followed by a discussion. How do we make our work, our land, our river, our food, and our downtowns greater and greener?

Think Globally, Act Locally to Protect our Watersheds: How can a tree or a rain garden in your backyard help the mighty Hudson River?

Join the Hudson River Watershed Alliance, the Hudson Valley Regional Council, Clearwater, and the Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance to learn about the tools that you can use in your own back yard to protect our Hudson River and its watershed. Presented will be information regarding citizen science monitoring programs, and case studies in green infrastructure planning and local watershed planning for the Quassaick Creek in Newburgh.

An Historic Interpreter with a trunk of replica remedies introduces the audience to the medical theories popular during the Revolutionary War. George Washington’s illness is given as an example of the range of treatments practiced, emphasizing the ongoing pursuit of medical knowledge.
The Future of the Newburgh Waterfront

What kind of waterfront do you want for Newburgh? This roundtable discussion is open to all, city officials, waterfront supporters, and local groups who care about water access, recreation and education opportunities, and special attractions on Newburgh’s waterfront. Come share your ideas. Help make Newburgh become the waterfront destination it once was.
The City of Newburgh, Orange County and the Orange County Rural Development Advisory Corp. (RDAC) are offering technical assistance and information sessions about low-interest loans and grants available to qualified residents for home improvements.
The funding is intended to help homeowners address health and safety concerns and promote energy efficient options. The sessions are sponsored by the City of Newburgh CDBG program and the Newburgh Free Library.
